Sometime this week, the odometer and tripmeter on my '79 GL1000 stopped working. The speedo is fine.
Now, if I crack into the speedo case, Is there something fairly obvious that fails and causes this issue?
For about half the week, I was scratching my head trying to explain what looked like awful fuel economy. Last tank (last week) was 38mpg. Nearing reserve with 52 miles on the tripmeter was troubling. Then I started checking my sanity while riding this afternoon. I reset the tripmeter and paid attention to the odometer - 10 miles later, 0000 on the tripmeter and no change on the odo. (I generally don't pay that much attention to the tripmeter until I fuel up.)
Some potential clues?
Last week, I got caught in a pretty serious downpour riding home from work. 40-degrees and rain. The bike got, umm, wet - as did my pants and shirt under my leathers. There's no sign that the speedo innards got wet.
I have had to swap in a couple old cables in the last month. But the cable spins the speedo fine.
I have a couple GL1100 speedo clusters but don't like the 85mph limit. Not sure I have a spare '83 with the 150mph limit - or if it will slip into the GL1000 "dashboard." I'd rather repair the '79 speedo, of course.
