Gl1100 Locked?

#1

Post by Aaronk »

I recently just bought a 82 gl1100 the guy I got it from told me the starter was bad and needs replaced I got it home and decided to push start it and I had it running for a few minutes and rode it around for a minute killed it then started it again but this time I went to ride it and it shut off I haven't been able to start it again the motor does not turn at all Ive pulled the plugs and shifted it into 5th and tried to turn the wheel and it's not budging so I don't think it's hydro locked I'm not a mechanic but I've been doing research and I think it could be the starter clutch because I pulled the starter itself and the motor is still not spinning am I missing something or does anyone have any ideas?

Engine oil level ìs correct we presume? Yes?

Remove both timing belts covers now.
Check the condition of both timing belts.
A broken timing belt is hazardous to the well-being of the valves (pistons) associated with that camshaft

:( It's an " Interference " gasoline engine

Yep Belts are definitely the next check. After that I would pull the valve covers and inspect the rockers and spindles. Also check to make sure it did not drop into gear.

You can probably cross the starter clutch off of your list. The starter clutch is a 1 way coupling between the starter motor and the engine. When they fail they almost always stop engaging so that the starter motor turns without making the engine turn.

Do you have a shop manual for the bike? If not I highly recommend getting one.
It should show you that there is a cap on the rear of the engine that you can unscrew to access a bolt in the end of the alternator shaft, which is used to turn the engine by hand with a 12mm wrench (much easier than trying to use the rear wheel to turn the engine). With the spark plugs out and the key off try turning that bolt (Note: always turn that bolt as if you are trying to tighten it). If the engine becomes hard to move when you are turning it by hand stop and look for what is making it hard to turn (including the suggestions above).

BTW, don't try to turn the engine with the starter motor out. The end of the starter motor's shaft goes into a sprocket, which drives the engine via a chain and you don't want the chain to be pulled into the engine by the sprocket on the other end.

Any updates, Aaron?

Belts ok? Oil in the crankcase? Rockers seem ok?

Be sure it's in neutral and try using the bolt that Sidecar Bob describes to hand-turn the motor - clockwise only, please. With plugs removed, it should rotate reasonably easily if the bike is in neutral.

Don't quit on it yet.
