Gl1000 OldWing with chopped Vetter fairing

Post by Flatlander80 »

I finally got my 75 GL1000 on the road this week. I had a Prestalite ignition give up the ghost, and never thought to check it. I thought it was coils, so I installed gl1500 coils, eliminating the ballast resistor, and still wouldn’t run on the front 2 cylinders. Ordered and installed a DS 1-3 and bingo! All that work on the coils and that wasn’t even the issue! But it was work that I wanted to do (higher performance coils with replaceable wires.

I did the fairing last year. It’s the original fairing from when I got my first bike (which became the parts bike), and it was cracked when I got it. Cut out most of the inside (including the headlight mount), marked and cut the outside profile, and got to fitting it. It’s mounted with a bracket off the gauge cluster at the top, and another bracket off the brake splitter at the bottom. I used the best pair of signal lights I had, and mounted another old pair in the saddlebags.

Nice job, I like the black and white theme. I better like it since I bought this yesterday:

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I like my '21 RTL, but it isn't as much fun as the GL1800 that it replaced. A bit better on the four-lanes, a lot more work on the twistys.
