Going through my carbs bought a heavy duty ultrasonic cleaner at a swap meet over the weekend and a friend that used to do restorations recommended using some liquid soap with warm water to clean the carbs with in it. He said you do that before your hit it with a solvent cleaning and it releases gunk that dissolves in water and the soap acts as a wetting agent to promote the release. Sure enough the water was filthy and you could see little bubbles cavatating all over the carb. This makes it easier and more effective for the solvent to work according to my friend.
There is a chemical that I'm using on the carbs to clean the outside and brighten the finish. It even removes mild oxidation. You can also use it to clean your jets. Its a mild acid ion exchange cleaner called chromic oxide bath. It is used in the chrome plating industry and is also known as a brightening agent. It removes only a few microns of metal as long as you don't leave it in too long. In about 6 soconds it polished the jets. You can use a q-tip on the outside of the carb and it brightens and shines it.
I also found a new company that specializes in metal finishing supplies. Its calle www.caswellplating.com. I bought some buffing wheels and converted a large grinder into a buffer. There is another outfit that sells buffer pretty cheap called Harbor Freight for about $69 for an 8" 3/4 horse. I buffed out the tops of the carbs and they came out beautiful. They also sell all the small specialized buffs for hard to reach areas. They also sell the compounds and plating solutions.
Now to my question. I need to buy air cut off kits (8 for 2 bikes) and carb rebuild kits (x 8). Which is the most competitive place to get them? Is K&L the way to go or are there other brands? I also need to replace the rope like plenum seal between the two halves of the air box. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

Try this ChumbiWumba ; http://www.saber-cycle.com/cgi-bin/shop ... roduct=102 , or for the list of items ; http://www.saber-cycle.com/cgi-bin/shop ... category=1 I'm told I'm getting really crappy gas milage at 33 mpg . abnd I thought that that was good , NOT . So I may have to look into replacing the air cutoff valves .Hope this helps CWa.

Hey Chumbawumba great idea to clean y0ur carbs and the air cutoff valves are a very important. I had heard of the air cutoff prior to taking my carbs off but had not ordered them and it has cost me quite a bit of time as they wee shot and I had to await shipment. Sabre cycle as a good selection of items along with carb parts and other various bits and pieces. crosso
Good luck with the fix and do it right the first time so you will be on the road instead of waiting for parts.Take care. Mike
