Howdy Hi and a couple of question from a new member

Boy am I glad I stumbled into this board. I'm finally getting around to a todo in my life in owning a nekkid Goldwing. The opportunity sprung on me in two forms a 1981 GL1100 95% intact and rescued from an ignominious fate of rotting into dust on a driveway. I haven't even begun to dig into into it. All I know at this point is that it turns over but it won't start. My shadetree intincts suspiciously eyes the carbs but I'm going to do a full post mortem before jumping to any conclusions.

My question for you gentlleman of the G-ride is how far up and down the Gl dna food chain can one go to comingle parts ie will '78, 79, 80 on the minus side work (fit) fit the 1981 that I own. How about on the plus side of the divide '82,83. I suspect where there are major engine differences such as 1200 1500 there are obvious problems. But how about on head lights, seats and other trim items?

Besides Ebay are there any other US sites where one can buy parts?

I bought this one for about $300 and it turns over. Someone rattlecanned it black. Also notice the downturned exhaust pipe. Is this Honda or aftermarket?

This is one that was offered to me for about $250 and it turns over but won't start. It also is a 1981 GL1100 with the fairings removed.

Any info you can share about the mixing of years and parts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Those are two different bikes two top and the two bottom are they not ? Anyhow , Once again there are so many aftermarket parts and styles to be had , it depends on what you want to do now , what I meen is do you want to rebuild it classic stock or go for a custom look . I have myself replaced alot of stock parts on my 82 GL 1100 std . There are so many ideas in the photo Albums and Wing Mans Lounge , have a look and come on back and let us know and we'll go from there .

Oh And Welcome ChumbiWumba , you found the right place .

You are right they are two different bikes. The one at the top is the one that I think I will restore. I believe it to be a stock naked wing. The one one on the bottom got all its feathers plucked and I fear would be a rewire nightmare as evidence by the front bramble of wires in the junction box.

I want to keep it as stock as possible. My main mission is to get it running first of course.

I was hoping to find out about compatibility bracketed above and below my model year. For example on Ebay I saw a seat for an '82 1100 and I need a newer seat. Would it fit? I need to replace the head light ring (the one that retains the glass in the front). Can I use a '79,'80 or '82? They seem to pop up regularly on Ebay. Are there any other salvage yards available?

I just ordered the manuals so I'm flying kinda blind here.

Thanks

Bill

The seat looks Ok , just have to recover it , would be less expencive , but before that I would purchase a jell pad for your seat cut out some foam , just enough for that jell pad and recover . The head light retainer ring I'm
sure will fit . But the Gent that will know more about the parts braketed in question is our BigT , Who also has a busness in said stock parts of different bikes and years . There is a heck of alot of knowledge here the guys will get around put a two cents in when they see this , But Dang , I'm usually the guy who gets change though , LOL .

Most parts are interchangable between the different 1100's, the exceptions being the left hand switchgear, some gearbox parts and brakes. If twin piston calipers are fitted to an earlier 1100 with single piston calipers fitted as standard, then you will have to fit the discs as well.
If you list the parts to want to fir from a different year 1100 then list them here and someone will tell you iff they will fit and what mods if any will be required.

ChumbiWumba,
A good referrence for compatabillity would be www.goldwinginfo.com . There you'll find part numbers, & what year the parts fit. From my experience with gl1000' & gl1100's, mother Honda tried to keep as many parts as possible from different year/models being the same.
As far as the seat, an gl1100 seat will fit. You can adapt a gl1000 seat to fit by lenthening the tounge & rear brackets. I know a guy that restores gl1100's & puts a Corbin Gun Fighter for a gl1000 on each one (talk about sharp). The Corbin seat sets you back a couple of inches, & down an inch or two.

The one with the custom paint job  is a Standard, or Naked wing, and the second is a stripped Interstate. You could always bring them both back to their original glory. One as a dressed touring machine, & the other as a sporty Naked Wing :-D

Have Fun.
