TASK: Replace Burnt Out Headlight Lamp on 1986 GL1200 Interstate
APPROXIMATE TIME: 20 Minutes
TOOLS NEEDED:
Flat Blade tool (such as a stiff spatula)
#2 Philips Screw Driver
10MM Socket Wrench and Driver
PARTS:
1 - Headlight Bulb Xenon H4 9003/hb4 60w/55w
2 - BULB (12V 4W) (12V4W) (T8/4) (optional)
SKILL LEVEL: HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENT on an 86 GL1200 is a relatively easy task. (A Caveman could do it)
1. Place Flat Blade tool under trim piece. Place a soft cloth under the tool if you are concerned about scratching your paint. Gently pry up on the trim piece until it pops free.
2. Lift Trim piece and secure in an upright position.
3. Remove lower trim piece by removing two phillips screws.
4. Remove four 10MM bolts securing upper and lower retaining brackets. Note the position of the brackets prior to removal.
5. Pull the Headlight assembly forward out of the fairing, being careful not to pull the adjustment cable loose.
6. Pull the rubber plug cover back and remove the plug from the Headlamp.
7. Disconnect the plug from the rear of the headlamp.
8. Unclip Headlamp, remove and replace with new one. Do not touch the bulb with your fingers while installing.
INSTALLATION - Reverse of removal.
NOTE: Since the headlight assembly is already apart, it is recommended you replace the running lights in the headlight assembly at the same time as the headlamp.
Authors note: The headlight on this wing quit working, and the high-beam indicator removed on at all settings. Assuming the headlight had burnt out, I discovered that the Headlamp Socket had severely melted. This required replacement of the socket, after which, the high-beam and lamp worked correctly.
