Dang I hate opening walls and finding a stuff like this. At least 2 of these wire are hot. No idea what they powered in the past. It is just about head high on an exterior wall.

Have been through every part of the wiring in the rest of the house and this is the final circuit that has not been updated. I still have one offshoot from this circuit that goes into another wall that was live when I flipped the breaker. I have not lost lights or power in any area of the house so I can only guess it is terminated somewhere in the hallway ceiling. Ether way these wires will never see power again. 130 year old houses hide so many secrets. Will try to get a vid up later.

Head height on an exterior wall made me think perhaps an exterior lighting fixture, but whatever it was doesn't matter because it is long gone.
Knob & tube wiring mostly ended after WWII but apparently if done correctly it is at least as good as the later systems with metallic or non metallic sheathed cables (other than not having a ground wire but that could be added if someone was determined to keep K&T). Apparently the big issue is that the wires had to be at least 6" apart, which was OK when there were only a couple of circuits but by the '40s it was apparent that many more than that would be needed and there just wasn't room to keep the wires separated.

What is dangerous is wires buried within walls or ceilings and not properly terminated (this is part of why code calls for all junctions to be inside boxes that are accessible after the wall or ceiling has been finished). I've seen plastic sheathed cables left inside walls like that too and they are just as bad to come across when you aren't expecting it.

Where I grew up many houses that old had natural gas piped to every room for lighting at one point before electric lighting became popular. I remember seeing the capped off gas pipes in my aunt's place when I was a kid. Ironically, the house was heated with coal at that time (she got a gas furnace in the late '60s).

I hear you on the new floor, but you could also just fir out the baseboard 1 inch again then fir out a quarter round 1/2 inch. Sure sounds kind of fluky so not a big fan of that. Just depends how bad you want to keep the original floor. Firing out Wains coating is another option but you then loose more space also and you are not a fan of that and making the room smaller is not something I would do either.

If you put up the drywall, then added 1" baseboard the gap would only be about 1/2". A 3/4" shoe moulding (I'm using cove instead of 1/4 round) should cover that.

I've been laying what they call "SPC LVP" (Stone Plastic Composite Luxury Vinyl Plank) to replace the worn sheet vinyl floors here and we like it enough that we are talking about covering the well worn oak parquet with it eventually too.

I really should start a thread about my project......

Bob

They don't sell 1 inch boards down here. They call them 1 x whatever but they are 3/4 or even smaller. The only thing that is a true 1 inch is what they call 5 quarter board for decking purposes. What they sell as a 2 x 4 is in fact 1 1/2 by 3 1/2. Once I get all the baseboard up I will be able to get accurate measurements and make a decision. I need to lock that in before I can start mounting electrical boxes so I know what depth they should be at. It might be as simple as facing all the studs with a piece of lath. I had to do that in a couple rooms of the last house I gutted, and that was actually a pretty easy correction. I took today off but the wife works at the church tomorrow so I hope to get the rest of the ceiling lath down. After that and the resulting cleanup I can work on getting the baseboard out. I am really starting to chomp at the bit to do something other than demolition! I have a roll of wire so even if the boxes are not ready to be mounted I can still string all the wire and that will provide some sense of accomplishment. I plan on 6 outlets, a double gang by the entryway door, and a single by the doorway for the bathroom.

Lumber sizes are the same here. They make 5/4 clear pine boards for applications like yours
https://www.homedepot.com/p/5-4-in-x-6- ... /202100773

But I was thinking you might be able to separate the two layers of the old baseboard and re-use them

BTW, after I moved the snow I sanded drywall compound for a couple of hours in the stairwell. This is going to be a much bigger job than I expected.

Got the rest of the lath off the ceiling and removed all the cloth bound wiring. Got started on the baseboard tearout. That is a real challenge as it is pined between the floor and the wall studs. I have a sizeable stack of 1x6 boards I picked up at a construction site a while back. Plan to rip those to 2 inches and use them to fir out the wall studs. That 3/4" should take care of my floor gap.

In the last couple days I been working a few hours each day. I got the ceiling down completely and all the old wire out. The baseboard trim is a real bugger. I got about half of it yesterday and the rest today. Have to pry the top away from the studs and then reach in with the sawzall and cut the bottom nail for each stud then pry it up and out of the well between the flooring and the wall studs. It cam out in pieces so no chance of reusing it. I got a load of plaster and lath loaded in the truck for Saturday at the dump. Wife took some time off and is pitching in. The 2 exterior walls are the only significant demolition left to do so she started on that while I was finishing up the baseboard and then shoveling. We also made a run to Home Depot and picked up outlet boxes etc.

If we have a good day tomorrow the demo should be complete and I can start stringing the twine to see how bad the studs are. These old rough cut studs are never equal and straight. I also need to clean the porch area and set up my saws so i can start constructing instead of destructing.

Most of the floor void area that needs to be covered is 2 1/4 inches or less. That can be managed by adding just 3/4 inch to each stud. Add 1/2 inch sheet rock then 3/4 inch of baseboard and the quarter round and it should be fine.

We are looking at options for the ceiling right now. I plan to Sheetrock it but I just don't know if my shoulders are up for the finishing of that. We have talked about boxed beams and a couple other things to cover the joints. Right now the reproduction ceiling tins are the leading thought. We did those for our Kitchen backsplash and they still look great 11 years later.
