Started tearing out the bedroom today. Spent the first 2 hours playing with electric. I knew there was a dedicated Breaker but soon found out there was also power from jumpers off outlets in the living room on the other side of a shared wall. Those are isolated for now. Once I get the wall opened fully I can remove those pigtails. Had to rush to get power back on the TIVO Box so the Better Half's Soaps would record! Anyway I got all the sheetrock off one wall and probably 2/3rds of the plaster down and some of the lathe. Got all that shoveled out onto the porch for now. Will continue tomorrow.

House wiring can be confusing and they're all different so there are no Clymer drawings to refer to
My Mom & Dad had this house built to Dad's plans so it has been in our family since new ('94). The builder's electrician did a good job and and I did anything that was added later (when Dad finished the basement I came along behind him and added the wiring &c and we've lived here longer than they did). Even so I found myself wasting a lot of time figuring out what is on which breaker because the notes on the panel weren't complete enough.
In the past I have written the breaker number on the front of switch & plug plates in the basement & garage and on the backs of them upstairs. That helps but markings can wear off, some still haven't been marked and I'd prefer to know without removing plates.
A few months ago I started a little notebook with a more complete list than there is room for on the panels plus pages for each breaker that has multiple items, all written in pencil so that it is easy to update when I change something. The book hangs on a magnetic hook on the panel so there is no excuse for not entering more information when it is found.

BTW, We renovated our kitchen last year and I'm calling this winter's project 2 Bathrooms, a Laundry Room and a Landing. I haven't posted anything about them here except the odd passing remark because it isn't bike related. Let me know if you guys are interested and I'll start a thread (if enough are interested and enough of us are renovating maybe a new forum area might be merited).

I have remapped out the electric in this house a couple times and have a pretty decent gouge sheet. The Previous owner was an electrical engineer and I think he made some stuff more complicated than it needed to be.

Got a fair amount done today but not as much as I wanted. The sheetrock and the plaster are completely removed from 2 walls. I started ripping down the lath and ran into an issue with the baseboard trim. I guess when they installed the hardwood floors they did not bother to remove the baseboard. So the 1 x 8 baseboard goes down beside the the hardwood flooring. That is going to make this a serious pain. With the thickness of the plaster and lath and then the baseboard trim the hardwood flooring is almost 2 inches out from the studs. Going to have to fir out the studs a lot more than I wanted to.

Wow, I think just put up the baseboard and fir behind the quarter round and finish all three surfaces. Makes the room bigger. Just a thought.

Got the lath off that wall and shoveled all the plaster from both those walls into the truck for a dump run tomorrow. Got to be more than a 1,000 pounds. Truck is not squatting but definitely lower in the back than the front.

So when I feel up to it two more walls and a ceiling yet to tear out. Hate the ceiling tear out. Walls are nasty dusty but the ceiling just seems to all fall on your head! But once the ceiling is down I can start working on the wiring for that room and the insulation in the void from the top of the porch (attic area).

There is about a 2 1/2 foot vertical area in the porch attic up against the house proper that is not closed off or insulated. During the summer the heat from the porch attic area goes straight into the floor system of the second floor bedroom. The ends of the floor rafters are wide open to that porch attic. If you walk in that 2nd floor bedroom on a sunny day you can feel the heat radiating up through the floor. Very much looking forward to fixing that.

Oh, and Pepper had a better idea for the short floorboards. Do not use the fir strips on the quarter round I suggested. She says you need Wainscoting and you can fir that out so the baseboard goes into the right place. It is period correct for your house and may or may not gain Rusty's approval.

On my porch the area under is not heated, and the vents are just at the soffit and dead end at the house so the hot air has no where to go. Since the area is not conditioned, it works okay. But for you, it may make sense to block off the floor but allow air to flow up the wall to a vertical vent, like a dryer vent so that rain does not enter. Have to do more thinking on this.

The porch roof is vented with 2 static vents. Even with those it is on the south side of the house it gets full sun and it gets very hot in there.

Never been a huge fan of wainscotting. I have time to study it some. Once I get the tear out complete I will have a better visualization of the impact of different solutions. With old rough cut 2 x 4's topped with plaster and Lath the walls are already over 6 inches. On the sides I can add another hardwood strip easy enough but the ends require more thought. If they are trimmed up nice maybe a single piece of walnut or something dark to accent the oak? I don't know yet. Probably a year or more before I have to decide.

Dump run today plaster and Lath was 980 pounds. That was Number 3 this month. I am allowed 12 for the year for free.

Yea it really is.
He (the Previous owner) put up the sheet rock with a lot of 3 inch screws that all have to be removed. Naturally the heads are all full of plaster. So it takes a LOT of effort to keep the bit engaged in the screw head when taking them out. Luckily I have been able to get better than 90% with the screw gun. The remaining are removed with vice grips. Slow process.
I got about a third of the ceiling plaster down yesterday. Between the screws and the hammering and prying and then loading the truck I was seriously done in last night. Feeling sore but Okay today so I did not over do it. Prolly relax today and make Dump run # 4 tomorrow. Truck is definitely squatting this time.

I have a couple dog appointments next week but If I can have the ceiling completely opened up and start on the wiring by next weekend I will be happy with that.
