These Weber clones: EMPI, RALLY, DECADE .... what is this?

#1

Post by taunusrainer »

Hi!
I was just browsing the web for some 40IDF carbs when I came across these Weber knockoffs at ebay. I tried to find them elsewhere but no results.
Who did manufacture them? Any shops known?
Early EMPI had porosity problems, did the others also have issues?
Is Decade still on the market?
Many questions, I know...but here in Europe we can only buy genuine italian or fake spanish Webers at horrible prices.
Thank You!
Ray

I did a little bit of checking.
The "Rally" is described as an "unbranded" Weber IDF from China. They are REALLY inexpensive in this EBAY LISTING.
There were some positive comments about the "Decade" carbs.
Many VW folks run the EMPI's.
No matter how you go, if they come with 28mm chokes (main venturi's) the jets are fairly inexpensive and really easy to change. I think all the Weber branded IDF's are made in Spain.

Greg,
did You find any decade carbs for sale anywhere? I didn't.
Thx for the link, this is one really hot offer. The carbs look good, the casting edges look sharp, the surfaces look smooth, I think I might give it a try.
What do You think does the seller want to say with tthis note:
Notice:
The oil channels of carburetors will be blocked without cleaning.
Please clean up the oil channels and air filters as well as use the clean fuel before installing the carburetors.
Oil channels? :?: :?:

That is pretty darn cheap if they work...I got a good deal on the Webers I bought, but I don't think it was quite that cheap.

Probably. I bet if you would contact the actual seller you may get a definitive answer.

It still seems odd to me that a basic carb change can account for such a large HP gain (but it does). It is also curious that a stock 1000 makes about 61 ft-lbs, a Weber 1000 makes about 61 ft-lbs, and a blown 1000 makes about 61 ft-lbs. Rear wheel HP goes from around 60, to 75, to over 90, but the torque stays right there. I assume that without changing the displacement or compression ratio that the torque isn't going to change either.
I've wondered from time to time what CYBORG'S Cyborg makes on the nitrous.

Where did you read that none of those mods changed the torque?
