While some oils may be a bit better than others for various reasons, I think we can all agree that the important thing is to change when it needs to be changed.

even the cheapest oil with frequent changes is better than not changing it often enough with thet best oil on the planet.

On the subject of oil, someone I know on another forum once mentioned that when he's putting his bike away in the fall hedrains the oil, removes the filter and fillsthe engine up completely with cheap oil (I thinkhe mentioned buying it at the grocery store) so that there isn't as much air in the crankcase for condensation. In the spring he drains it again and puts in a fresh filter and the correct amount of oil.

What do you guys think of that?

Kind of reminds me of the Canadian guy I knew who took the brake pads off his BMW roadster and greased the rotors. I reckoned he made a lot of work for himself.

There's something to be said for that Sidecar Bob. I pulled the heads off my '82 after sitting for 9 monthes, all four cyl walls are lightly rusted. Condensation is worst with greatest temp changes. Also, the engine stops leaving one or more valves open, another opening for moisture. You'd need to pull the vavle covers and lossen the rockers too.

My 2 cents.

I'm not sure a crankcase full of oil would help that as much as a teaspoon of oil in the cyl and turning it over. If you were going to leave it for 50 years that would be helpful (filling case), but I'll be dead by then anyway.

i use castrol for bikes and change it between four and five thousand miles on both wings. i tried castrol for cars in my '75 cb750. the bike ran hot and the oil got sheared, tried castrol 15w 40 in the 1200 wing, shifting was notchie almost like old oil was in there. went back to castrol for bikes

Syn oils

#36

Post by theedric1 »

Hi all, Im an MMI grad and believe me the oil topic is pretty much settled there. If you can afford it Syn is well worth the little extra and WILL prolong your bikes top end immeasurably. Having seen the results of torn down similar bikes and mileage run with dino vs syn is really remarkable. The syn bikes rings, bearings, bores and so on are dramatically fresher and in spec. The Mobil One that you can get at most any Wal mart is perfect for bikes, dont worry about friction modifiers, the stuff was formulated with bikes in mind. The mobil rep even spoke at length about it in the trades.
Rides a wing himself that uses nothing but Mobil 1 Syn 10/30! 8)

the difference

Post by boogie red »

Ya know,,,,,The difference in in the drivers. Some folks have a feel for machinery and become apart of it. I have never worn out a clutch. They respect it and treeat it as such, the result is consistant preformance which will keep you smileing! take care of it and still run it at the peg at times, ye haw, gotta have some grins! I really like the idea of moble one, I run rottella 15-40. My engine and tranny are pretty loose so I thing this helps!

I think TOOLMAN should be meritoriously be promoted, a person who has put that many miles on several wings is not a "RUSTY PROBE" any seconds? :8)

i use amsol 10w-40 synthetic, and supplement it with motorkote, a hyper lubricant, in all three of my bikes, no problems, just much better performance and cooler running engines.
