Longer clutch & throttle cables

#1

Post by dartman1962 »

Hi everyone,

I have some 1 3/8” handle bar risers. Recently made a couple more plates to go under the risers, to add a little more height to 1 5/8”. I would like to add possibly a little more

My clutch & throttle cables are not completely maxed out (tight), but I was wondering where I might look for maybe 2” longer ones!

I figured someone on here might know😉

This thread might shed some light. I know 78/79 were slightly longer than the early ones. Problem I think now is that all aftermarket sources only sell one length and I do not know what that might be. viewtopic.php?t=67986&hilit=cable+lengths#p751751

You could also make your own instead of finding ready made.

It's a crap shoot, but every time I bought new cables, they were longer than the old ones. One size fits more with less inventory, I guess. Which was a pain when I was putting shorter bars on. Even diving in and cutting them shorter was a pain, because the kits with the ends are uncommon, and a waste when you just need one set.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I am sending off an email to a supplier to see if they can tell me the lengths of the 1977 GL’s as it appears the pull back of the handlebar is further on that model.

You could also try methodical rerouting of existing cables. You can often gain or use up several inches.

I already have risers prior to, so most of the slack has been used up.
I would like to get an extra 1/2 -3/4 of an inch on the bars.

I think my arms have shrunk, kinda like some other extremities!😉 lol!

  • Get a roll of 1/8" solder. (You might be able to substitute weed-whacker string.)
  • Feed it through the bike from near the area where it mounts, around the bars, and through the bike, following the path of the "cable of interest" as close as possible.
  • Tape it in place were it mounts to the engine and make sure you leave sufficient loop size if it wraps around obstacles like the gauge cluster. Tape down the handlebar end.
  • Move the bars lock to lock and make sure there is enough length for free movement.
  • Mark the point where the handlebar end of the solder meets the mounting point of the cable.
  • Gently pull the solder out of the frame. Measure the length you require.
Barnet makes custom cables for the bike. You might need to send pictures of something like the motor end of the clutch cable, but for the other cables it shouldn't be necessary. I used Motion Pro but they don't hold up as well as the Barnett. I'm on about my 4th clutch cable. It's a "6" under" and fits both the drag bars and the clubman bars.
Whoever you choose, a phone call or chat might be in order.
