extending wiring harness to coils

#1

Post by leonardhcross »

Hello naked friends. One of the more frustrating electrical projects on these GL1000's is connecting newly installed coils to their wiring harness. Not only is it a tight spot for hands, the pigtails coming off the coils are really short as are the wires on the wiring harness. Trying to secure the bullet connectors in such tight quarters with short wires can be very frustrating. I never come away from the project feeling confidant in my bullet connectors. This time, while I have the coils removed, I added 5 inches to each of the wiring harness wires. Fortunately, I had an extra wiring harness for parts. I started by cutting as much of the coil harness off the parts harness as I could. Then, using crimp connectors and shrink-wrap sleeves, I added the new five inch wires to the existing harness wires. As you can see, I was able to do all of the work through the side of the shelter. In the end, I have a lot more wire to work with. When my replacement coils arrive, I will let you know if it made the job easier or not.

My coils have been installed and removed and re-installed again. I am very glad that I extended the harness. I also wrapped the new extensions and connectors with electrical tape to tidy things up.
