Computer Help Needed

#1

Post by ritalz »

Had a total failure of my old desktop computer. Fast forward to this week and purchased a used unit with a fresh OS installed. Everything seems to work fine except for sharing my printers with my laptop. I've installed my printers on the host (desktop) and made sure they are marked as shareable. Also set the host to allow discovery by others on my home network. Both printers will print from the host without problems. Move on to the laptop and proceed to install the printers. While trying to add the printers the laptop I drill down and select the printer by name on the host, it responds with 'Windows cannot connect to the printer'. It also shows an error code '0x0000011b' which takes me on a wild goose chase. I know this should work since it is the same setup I had before. I'm missing something but can't seem to figure it out.

Different OS's? I know some of the security patches have caused issues for network printing. Have seen this discussed on reddit

Newer version of Windows on this machine. I've also read about a certain patch that had similar issues. One workaround is altering the registry which I tried. Have not looked up the patch to delete it yet. Might need to be my next move.

I do two things with my printer, fix the IP address on the modem, then search for that IP in the printer search on the laptop. Your actual mileage may vary.

Still not able to connect to both printers. I moved one printer to a cat5 connection at the router but the other one only has a USB cable. The router has a USB port but it is only used for diagnostics. When I try to add the printer the laptop can detect the printer on the desktop but will not connect. Guess I'm just going to live with it. Not very handy but I can always share the file to the desktop and print from there. These days we don't do much printing anyway.

We do use the usb port as a backup to print from. You have to set up the printer as new in the computer, like add a new one and then plug in the printer and it becomes a unique one.

I've gone through the add procedures multiple times. Even added with the IP address and still not able to print. Seems strange because I can share files between computers without a problem.
