Leftover(?) oring from water pump replcement

#1

Post by toomanybikes »

After replacing the water pump on my GL1100, there is a leftover oring from the gasket kit from ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/334095162035). The one marked in red is the extra. I installed new orings for all the ones that came out and now have the cover in place. I prefer not to take the cover off if the oring is simply extra.

It didn't fit cleanly into any of the apparent channels or grooves. Some ideas/questions ...
1. Is it possibly used if people are rebuilding the water pump as opposed to replacing it?
2. Is this perhaps needed for the 70's GL1000 but not the 80's 1100?
3. Does anyone of a good image of the front of the engine with oring locations marked?

Unfortunately I did not take a "before" picture.

Perfect, thank you. Looks like the extra oring is probably for the 82-83 neutral switch, although the size doesn't seem to match the textual description. I didn't see any other possible solution in the write-up or images.

I have the 1978 Parts Catalog and it shows 3 O-rings for the pump and one for the "cap, water pump" which is the hose fitting. Looks like a couple were superceded. #7 looks like 2-req'd making a total of 5.
I thought I had the 1100 Parts catalog but I can't find it. It might be in the shop area here.

Thanks. FYI, the image of the engine cover is missing a few orings, namely
- one that goes around the positioning upper LH (LH when sitting on bike) dowel and, oddly, behind the gasket
- two that go around the coolant channels roughly 16mm ID

Below is a pic of the orings that came out of my bike, including the impeller cover oring to the far left. After reading all this and the linked thread, I'm more confident that everything is in correctly. Thanks all.

I didn't read the Roady doc; however, I think the extra O-Ring is for the thermostat housing. It goes between the engine block and the thermostat housing.
