new toy 84 1200 Standard

Post by Whiskerfish »

Have not had any time yet to really delve into this. I just brought it home yesterday and have had other priorities. But quick and dirty 1984 1200 Standard with 95,000 plus miles. Yes it does have the OEM Grab rail. It is in excellent condition. the PO used a old dressed 1200 rack to build the backrest for his Wife.

The goal is a refresh not a restoration. I will concentrate on making it a safe reliable ride.

Runs but not well. Under power it seems like it is firing on 3. rode it around the block after unloading it and mostly is seems okay. Front and back suspensions did not have any air in them. Tires are probably Okay for around town but at about 6 years and thin so they will be replaced. Brake lines look to be original. Brakes and clutch seem to work well but will need flushed and examined closely. Looking through the fill hole the gas tank looks really good. Carbs will naturally need redone. 3 yellows have been spliced and soldered twice I think.

1200 Standards are hard to find and it is a beautiful looking bike. Bet your 1800 may have a few less rides.

Thank You. She is a 10 footer but what can you expect for a bike that has seen her years and miles!!

Man, if they'd kept the lines straight rather than the "broken back" angles of the 80's styling, I might still have mine. That said, they are FANTASTIC bikes. Best of luck!
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Called the insurance company and added her to my policy then did the DMV thing. She is legal. Just wanted to.run up and down the road a bit to get a feel for her before I started tearing he apart. Sitting g in the garage idling charging nicely at 14.5 then the smoke started. No Joy ride today!

Replaced all 3 from the stator pigtail to the reg rec unit. Now it is overcharging. 15.1 at idle and 15.3 with the fan on. So the sense system will need examined. Also put a set of merc sticks on it. Sync was out to lunch. Also noticed that when I removed the fancy chrome carb covers it changed the synch. So that needs investigated.

I like this one but she needs some love. As bad as it was the synch came in quick . Much easier than a 1000 with those silly locknuts. Idle and throttle response are much improved. Once I get this overcharging issue straightened out I need to find out why that one cam rocker is making so much noise. Then I think she will be ready for a test ride to find out what else I want to address.

I also aired up the suspensions today so will check those tomorrow.

What kind of pressure do you run Liam?
