Well...the what I believe to be the second owner got it from a local museum, where he thought it was donated by the original owner. It has 68 k miles on it. I like working on bikes, so I'd like to just slowly do some maintenance to it, and take it for a local spin from time to time.

Welcome from Maine!

That's a really nice looking 78 that might be even sexier without the gray bits. (It is the NGW Club and all.) Did you get the lowers with that period-correct Vetter fairing?

I can believe it was in some bike museum somewhere - at least from the photos you've shared so far. I really dig that blue they had and the little instrument pods on the top of the shelter are just cool.

You'll find more than enough guidance on any maintenance or rehab task in Shop Talk or via search. If there's an issue with these bikes that has not yet surfaced on this site, I'd be pretty surprised.

And do start a build thread in Restorations once you start digging into the bike come Spring. You'll get even more guidance - at least some of which you'll definitely want to heed.

Hello from a former Michigander.
78's are the best looking. I wonder how many of us started out with Vetter fairings on the bikes? They sure are hard to get rid of.

No lowers that I'm aware of, just what you see. Does have original tool kit and owners manual. When I get it I'm going to browse that to see if any recent maintenance had been done.
I've done some works on other bikes I've had, and even built up a rigid frame bobber from an old HD ironhead I had. But I'm still abit intimidated by all the stuff on the goldwings, but I really do want to learn some, I can see me starting some threads later down the road, thanks for all the welcomes folks!!!

Welcome from Southeast Michigan. I went back and forth a few times before settling on an early model (it was the spokes)- the later models are VERY good looking. And apart from the yellow (I'm biased), the blue with yellow pinstripes is probably the best looking paint the GL1000 ever got.

Depending on where you're at, you should look up the annual vintage bike show at the Gilmore Car Museum. I'm usually there every year with at least a couple bikes, and the turnout is ranges from pretty good (in bad weather) to absolutely outstanding. And the venue is fantastic.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.
