My Wing

#1

Post by theailer »

I finally got myself a Wing yesterday. I have had no part at all in the customiZing of it other than throwing wads of cash at the PO.
It is very naked former Aspencade 1982 GL1100 and due to it being more than 40years old it is no longer necessary to do the MOT here in Sweden. There's even the inspection papers from the MOT as early as 1987 with the bike, got a folder filled to the brim with paperwork and old instruction books.

And before someone asks the timing belts have indeed just been replaced ;)

Loaded it on to my bike trailer after driving for 8hours one way on a perfectly sunny saturday(totally worth it).

These pictures are from today, cloudy with great risk of rain. Fingers crossed it let's up in the late afternoon.
I'm thinking a front fender might not be a bad idea and maybe also remove the chrome from the faux tank. Also try to tidy up the front brake hose and clutch cable somehow.
Other than that I think it looks very nice.

I like the luggage rack on the faux tank, looks period correct and functional to boot. But to each his own as that rack is not for everyone. The steering brace looks great too, they help these skinny forks a lot.

Thanks for the kind comments.
The chrome is actually starting to grow on me ;)
Took a photo the other day when I was out riding in the evening. Probably going to remove the sticker though.

Hello,
that's a really nice bike. I wish you a lot of fun with it on the road.

That's a sharp 1100. Someone put love into the build.

That whole bike is going to grow on you. The chrome is just the beginning.

The '82 is a great choice. You get dual piston calipers without the linked brakes of the '83.

Baffles in those pipes? I'm curious.

Thanks!
I think the PO just shortened the original pipes. It is loud but not obnoxiously so.

The gold wing became a white wing ;)
The bike season is really long here in southern Sweden but now it was time to wash the bike and put it in winter storage.

I've ordered a couple of cheap front and rear plastic fenders to try out during the no bike season, might be relocating the license plate to the rear fender(I live on a pretty long gravel road so a couple of extra centimeters of rear fender is nice to have) . Also been toying with the idea to buy a 2up saddle in case my better half want's to go on a ride.
Other stuff to do is to shorten the throttle wires, replace the headlight with a proper housing, get some steel braided brake hoses and just maybe have the faux tank repainted so I can put my brand new HONDA emblems on it ;)

I would also like to shorten the choke wire since the PO relocated it to just below the faux tank on the right side and it is incredible hard to pull out.

Replacing the rear suspension is also on the todo list(proably not this winter), not so much due to performance but the progressive 412 looks awesome.

I've already needed to replace the ignition coils so I think the electrical stuff needs to be replaced

You might try running the throttle cables OVER the air box. The extra distance smooths the bend while taking up a bit more cable than running under or along side the airbox.

Replaced the starter relay today and faffed around with the front fender.
If I don't wanna use an adapter plate for the front fender it will be real close to the wheel:

For the rear I might get a longer saddle and use the license plate as the rear fender, we'll see how it works out.

Also I had no idea that the gold wing had autocanceling flashers until I googled this device:

But it might not be working properly since I've had to cancel them manually.

I think you can try out that fender. It may scrape when a pebble gets caught in the tread but that often corrects quickly.
