I purchased a 75 Gl1000 in January of 2019 and intended to just clean it up some and have it ready to ride by spring. A week later.........I started to cut the frame up so I could install a monoshock and a custom tail. After three long years the only outstanding item is having the seat upholstered. This bike has been in my head for fifteen years and started out as a 77 cb750F that sadly was scrapped due to becoming a father, switching jobs, needing to move 4 times in two years.... you know life! I am not sure if the final product is a cafe racer or a street fighter. I am not really sure what to call it either. Everyone else seems to have great names for their projects. Since the bike is done, I figured I would show a couple of completion photos and then provide an outline of the build including pictures taken during the process. Here's a brief description of the work that was done.
  • Swing arm and frame modifications for mono- shock
  • Original gas tank deleted
  • Custom fuel tank and skeleton frame to support the original fuel tank shelter
  • Fuel tank has a fuel level sender installed to maintain the use of the original fuel gauge built into the shelter.
  • Custom overhanging tail frame
  • Custom hand formed aluminum rear cowl.
    • Original design was drafted in Fusion and 3d printed
  • Custom S.S. exhaust
  • Dual EMPI HPMX carbs with custom linkage
  • Deletion of mechanical fuel pump. Replaced with an electric pump
  • Custom radiator overflow tank
  • Custom battery/electronics box
  • Custom seat pan
  • M-Unit
  • Custom taillight enclosure
  • Tank and tail painted in Candy Antares Red with custom striping.
  • Original DID rims relaced using S.S. spokes.
  • Misc custom brackets and mounts.

It took a couple of weeks to get the carbs dialed in, but once I did it has been a kick to ride. The bike slimmed down to 480lbs and there is a noticeable difference between the power curve on this machine vs my stock 77. Handling is debatable. I feel like I can take corners faster and lower, but it may just be the riding position. The ride is definitely rougher because of the rear shock and the progressive springs in the front, but I can go ride for 2 hrs and not feel sore or fatigued after.

The battery charger cable was hiding it in the original picture. I reused the stock latch. The black knobs are also the original that were used to keep the shelter sides secured. I added one more towards the front because it was raddling too much.

Just under 4 gallons when it starts flowing out the top. 3-3/4 at a safe level.
