Temp gauge & Fan wiring.

#1

Post by Bytown Bandit »

Good Morning,

Wondering where I could order a new connector for the thermostat housing the controls the fan and Temp gauge for my 77 GL1000.

(Large black double pin connector with a large rubber boot)

Thank you in advance…

There are two connectors there - the double connector below the fan motor goes to the thermo SWITCH that oparates the fan (shorting the two connections in it should turn the fan ON). It completes the 12 Volt circuit to ground when the coolant temperature gets high enough to require the fan. It is easily reached with a long pair of needle nose or hemostats. The thermo SENSOR takes a single connection. This is located aft of the engine support, under the carb plenum, in the water manifold and is very hard to access without removing the rack. It generates a varying resistance to ground that gives the temperature meter a signal. It uses 7 Volts from the 7 Volt regulator.

I have never seen replacement connectors for sale except perhaps used on Ebay. Most just need a little cleaning.

I have never seen a part number breakdown of that harness so ordering new would require significant research I suspect. There are many used on Flea bay and such.
