Vin Number ...Aarrgghhh

Ok..I know that somewhere in these forums I saw a post about vin numbers.. and I read it .. I can't find it now...anyways. I went to purchase insurance for "King" (my wing). After giving the agent my vin # I was informed that mine was titled as a "kit"... and you ain't gonna believe this .. that jacked up my premium 62.00 a year. I remembered reading the link, in that post, that vin numbers did not have 17 digits until after 1980, since I have a 1980 my vin number doesn't have 17. The insurance agent thought that had something to do with it being labled a 'kit'. I stopped at a local bike shop on the way home I inquired about this "kit" thingie. The man ( who at one time was a Honda dealer) said something has happened in the history of that bike, as far as the titling of it is concerned and that the vin # had nothing to do with it being labled a "kit" ( i believe him cause I read that article) Should I be concerned about this? Can someone explain, "kit"?

Thank-you banzaiwing. I looked for that forever. It doesn't help me yet I wanted to make sure that what I read about vin # was correct. And I was .. still confused about the Kit thingie. Had it registered today ..and it thru the notary off too. Insurance papers say ....Year 1980 ...Make Kit ...Model Gold .. it is not a reconstructed title. Title says nothing about "kit". Notary says that something isn't right.
Any ideas, brothers?

I ran into the same problem with my '80 GL 1100. My agent with AAA said that about my vin too. When he ran the quote through Progressive they listed the vin as a salvaged or kit and wanted $418 for the year.
I went to Geico and they didn't give me any problems with the title/vin and my premium is only $247 for the year.
The folks at Geico told me that Honda (possibly other manufactures as well) used a different style of vin and now some programs that the insurance companies use don't recognize them as legitament vins. Honda used SC as the first two up to 1980. Tennessee Dept of Safety has my registration as the following: the make is Hond, year 1980 Model SC0, body MC, and the color as C C. The bike clearly says Honda Goldwing and the motor has the GL 1100 stamped on it and the bike is actually brown. Go figure. Hope that my post hasnt been to redundant.

Hi there, what do you mean with VIN.
Is is Vehicle Identification Number or something else ??
In Holland the system is a bit different than in the states, apparantly.
Do you need it for the insurrance ??
Got mine insured for 34 Euro's per year.

Yes Bart...the vehicle identification number... when it is put into the insurance company's computer software ...the bike comes up as a "kit" ...and it is not a kit. Seems that VIN #s were assigned differently a few years later ..so the ones of old dont come up as they should. .. well I did get insurance ..yet it cost me more because of this VIN# problem...seems that they could get it right...as much "cycle" insurance they sell. I know it will work out in the end.

I dont know if this will be of any assistance, but in the UK, Honda will identify a motorcycle from its VIN and engine numbers. They will confirm if these numbers were originally assigned to a bike as it came out of the factory, or wether the frame or engine were replaced at a laterdate. There may be a charge for this service however.

I had a problem when calling around for quotes. Some insurers couldn't find a listing for GL1000. So I stated it was a 1000cc, touring bike. $217/year basic liability through local Progressive agent. In Michigan that's about the going rate for liability, regardless of bike or insurance agent/company. Unfortunately only about $80 of that is the actual premium. The rest covers the "disaster relief fund".
In '98-'01 I had a TL1000(160mph, 120 hp sportbike) that I insured through Progressive for $118/year basic liability. That's alot cheaper than $2500/year full coverage
2 years ago I aquired a KZ900. I planned on and only had it for a short time. I found insurance through DairyLand......$75 for three months.

Well I did get insurance thru Progressive....liability coverage ..213.00 a year... Im not complaining about that ...exactly... what Im upset about is .. that they quoted a price on the phone.. upon arriving with title and the VIN# .. the quoted went up 62.00... its listed as a kit... Title doesnt say that at all ...The Notorary made the comment that something wasn't right because the title doesnt indicate ..kit or salvaged or reconstructed... I guess its the PRINCIPLE of the thing..makes me say hmmmmmmmm.

What do you mean by "kit"..?.. I know in the early 80's you could get a GL that had no fairing ,bags or trunk..you could get the parts thru Hondaline to change it over to the Interstate style..?..is that what kit you mean..?

No .. that is not what is meant ... it means that it was built by someone other than Honda.
Other than that I dont know any more... others have had the same issues....seems unfair to me.
