ALMOST THERE 76 LTD

When I was still living two places the bike needed a carb overhaul, so I tore it all down repaired parts of the frame, painted etc etc.... FINALLY, after living in one place I started it up.... worst rattle in the back I have ever heard, and it kept going in and out of gear....

Time to drop the engine out and see if I can figure out what is wrong. I do have another 76 engine (in ratty condition) to put in, if I cannot

and so it begins (again)

I had forgotten how many thing have to be unhooked to get the engine out. Instead of the screw that holds the wire for the neutral switch, the inside of the switch came out.... here is what a neutral switch looks like inside....

yeah, I ended up cutting the wire. I did check the stator bolt, and it is tight, so that is not the source of the horrible rattle

took out the clutch basket and it is good. Also removed the oil screen (you know the one impossible to remove with the engine in the frame... a few flacks of paint from when I painted the engine (the head covers were off) bu no bits and pieces of anything. removed the transmission cover and everything looks good there.

I had forgotten HOW MUCH oil will drain out even though you drained the oil!

I would like to say I never split one for a very long time. It is kinda like the hole in the boat where you pour money.

To be honest I have split a couple. But they were not going to be put back together. Just opened up to see what it was like inside and to salvage any parts I could. ;)

I've got a couple of bare blocks in my shop that I striped a couple of years ago. as long as there are still good used engines out there, Seems silly to spen the money to rebuild one..... if you can find all the parts

next I will pull off the back cover. btw, with the clutch basket out I would see/feel the primary chain and it looks/good. It is smaller than I expected.

I took a look at one of the '76 engines I have. It looks like it took a hit in the front right corner. I will take a picture later today.

I think I have split 4 or 5 but have never done a full rebuild. Mine were all split for specific problems. One was that scored cylinder wall and I needed to see what was going on below the rings. That engine is currently in my dressed 1000 and running fine. The rest were transmission popping out of gear issues. Those were all fixed with donations from other engines I had laying around.

The chain you see from the back cover is not the primary chain. The [primary chain is very thick, about 2 or 2 1/2 inches thick

then what is it (I looked on the parts fisch and it is the oil pump chain)? And yes, WF, this engine has the transmission popping out of gear issue. and since it is a LTD engine, I think worth fixing. David silver spares had left and right shift forks so I bought them.
