6 CYL INDIAN

#1

Post by sodbuster »

I just wanted to share what I saw on my recent trip to Beartooth Highway last year (2021). It is an Old Indian 4 cyl converted to 6 cylinders. We were pulled over on the side of the road to take some pictures about half way up to the top of the switchbacks. I heard it coming up the switchbacks and as it wizzed by I saw it was an Indian 4 or at least I thought it was. It didn't sound like a four. When we got up to Vista Point lookout we pulled in for a break and there it was. Upon closer observation we discovered that it had six cylinders and not four. In talking with the owner he described what he had to do to accomplish this task. Lengthening the crankcases, drive shaft, frame, seat, & obviously a number of other things. It was totally undistinguishable of any king of modification. The welds on the extended crankcases were totally absent. Everything looked like it was factory. Even the two carb setup looked legit. Totally awesome build !!!!!!

A brief part of me questioned the effective cooling of the rear cylinder(s), then the rest of my brain slapped it into unconsciousness so I just think it's awesome again.

The owner of the bike did mention he could only ride it for a period of time (don't recall how long) before he would need to pull over and let it cool down. The rear bank of cylinders would tend to overheat.

Also, you'll notice some extensions at the rear of the footboards. He said that was for his wife to use as a place to put her feet.

Outstanding! Really well done. Thanks for sharing.

I did a show in Denver a few years back an this fellow built a V-6 from a straight 4 Henderson. He did back in the '60's.
There's lot of talent out there for sure.

See, I love this stuff. Because, on the one hand, you need a certain level of skill, machinery, and mechanical aptitude to be able to pull of an engine mod like this, REGARDLESS of what parts you start with.

It takes a certain level of chutzpah to do all of the above to an engine that was built in the 30s or 40s, that you can't really find anymore. And to do that, yet preserve the lines of a bike built back when they were the most beautiful?

Yeah, I love it.
