Re: 1977 gl1000
Before I lost 1/2 completely, I had the bike running for a few seconds before it quickly and sharply cut out and died. I’ve gone over all the plugs and connections and they’re snug. Both coils get warm with ignition on. For getting timing right that should all be within the points plate since the red wire feeds to that plate then to the connectors for the test light. I can do the timing procedure for F1 and F2 timing marks meaning the mechanical aspect is working. What I can’t get is the points for 1/2(the right module) to connect. 3/4 points( left module) will connect on the right spot for F2 and on the spot 1/2 connects for the F1 mark. I’m not sure if it’ll make any sort of difference, but should I try setting 1/2 even if the test light isn’t on to see if I get spark on a crank?

Re: 1977 gl1000
Now Perform the same probe test I had prescribed for the 1-2 coil check for positive voltage, this time at the unplugged 3-4 double bullet terminal. Key switch ON and the OFF/RUN/OFF switch in the RUN position.
Does the test light illuminate when connected there?
I read and re-read and re-read again your last static timing attempt. VERY Puzzling. Are both Dyna S leads plugged into the same double bullet connector?

When the Dyna system is unplugged from the blue connector, the light doesn’t come on. When attempting to set timing each Dyna lead was plugged into its respective connectors (black to yellow white to blue).

Re: 1977 gl1000
Tapping out on this one now
I'm Back!
Remove #2(front left) and #4 (rear left ) spark plugs. Put the spark plugs back into their respective plug wires and lay them both on a good ground surface, Turn on the key and handlebar switch.
Perform the static timing test procedure for the left hand, 3-4 ignition coil.
Watch listen carefully. 2 sets of eyes is even better!
Does both spark plugs (2 AND 4) fire AT THE SAME TIME when the F2 mark aligns with the cross hairs in the timing window?
If YES, something is definitely out of whack in the BIKE'S primary ignition wiring system.
If NO, I'm tapping out again.

Re: 1977 gl1000
I think it’s a matter of Dynatek didn’t fix the 1/2 module. There’s no other possibility I can think of since 3/4 will open where 1/2 should but won’t

Re: 1977 gl1000
I set the 3/4 point and got both spark plugs in to test with lights off. Used a flashlight to see the wheel and while I only saw spark from #4, it was not on the F2 mark at all. It was shortly after the F1 mark went out of sight on the rotation. I sent it through to the F2 mark and the test light came on. Im not sure what to make of any of this but I don’t like it

Re: 1977 gl1000
I’ve been gone for the last week and I’m just reading this now so please forgive me if I missed something.
The GL coils and therefore the points fire 1 & 4 / 2 & 3. With the right front cylinder being #1, right rear cylinder #3, front left cylinder #2 and rear left cylinder #4 as you sit on the bike.
A problem with a coil or set of points (pickup on a dyna set) will affect either 1 & 4 or 2 & 3. If there is a spark problem with 1 & 2, 3 & 4, left bank or right bank it is not a coil or pickup issue.
If I misunderstood the issue I apologize.

Re: 1977 gl1000
On the wiring diagram it shows one coil going to 3&4 and another going to 1&2 so that’s how I wired up the Dyna system. However, I tried reversing the Dyna leads and now the 3&4 point won’t light up. I took a look through my wiring and all the connectors look good. Both coils were getting warm too. Wire doesn’t look pinched anywhere either.

Re: 1977 gl1000
Yep. I stand corrected. I checked the drawing and it does show 1 & 2 / 3 & 4.
That’s what I get for speaking from memory.
Sorry

Re: 1977 gl1000
I appreciate the guide, it is helpful. But I don’t think finding ground is any issue since I have consistent spark on 3&4 plugs. I was able to set both points by putting the leads one at a time into the blue connector for cylinders 3&4. Now having it timed I tried to crank the engine with the starter. Nothing. I put a new wire going to the 1&2 coil and still no spark. Maybe the coil is still receiving power but can’t send any out I really don’t know but I will inquire about a coil warranty claim

Re: 1977 gl1000
ah.... now it isn't such a puzzle to understand your methodology. Yes, seems you have proven the 1-2 Dyna S MODULE is indeed operating correctly.Apinkston wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 11:26 pm I appreciate the guide, it is helpful. (I will delete my post #221 content now )
With the key switch turned OFF, If you check the primary resistance directly across those 2 screws where the primary wires are attached to the affected ignition coil, you should see whatever ohms the ignition coil is designated as. 3ohms?
Next. Turn the key switch ON and the handlebar switch to RUN..( To prevent the ignition coils from overheating disconnect both Dyna S bullet connectors under the rubber umbrella.)
If that primary windings circuit test was determined to be complete through the ignition coil with the ohms test, and you have installed a new , uninterrupted primary circuit ground path wire from the DynaS wire lead bullet terminal to the 1-2 ignition coil's primary wire screw connection,, you have to establish that sufficient positive current is being delivered uninterrupted, to the other screw terminal on that ignition coil, too. Black/white wire.
If any one of those three requirements aren't confirmed as electrically correct, that's why your static timing testing light won't illuminate.

Re: 1977 gl1000
I am terribly sorry but yes my methodology is completely backwards, but it works for me. I just had no idea that a bad coil would have prevented me from getting a timing read on the points plate. Especially since I had tested it shortly I sent the points in. Must have been a bad test
