well, here we go. A friend called, with a problem on his 86 1200. Vibration over 70 mph. But only in overdrive. Wil be smooth to 100 plus in 4th. Anyone have any Ideas? He says it feels like from the rear of the bike. I will be taking a look at it Saturday.

What about that rear hub wearing,
Isn't that a 1200 problem, seems to ring a bell...
I do think we swap a rim on Gord's 1200 for this reason.. cause I have the old one out by the shed

Bearing was also an issue with it spinning in the mounting hole. Although I would expect that to show up at lower speeds too.
Brave man at 100 mph on one of these bikes.

How is vibration in fifth but not fourth a problem outside the engine?

I tend to agree. But would like to look at any possible solution that doesn't involve opening up the engine.....or replacing it.

Does it do it on the center stand?
With the front end tied down to the lift table or something obviously.

Hard to say. But use caution of course. If it has to have the rear tire spinning that fast I would be sitting on the bike. Maybe another set of eyes looking for anything out of the ordinary. And bring it up to speed slowly.
As mentioned earlier though with it doing it in OD but not in 4th gear it does point to an engine internal problem. IMO
