Is this the stock seat?

Hi,

I've been looking to recover my seat. Firstly, is this even the stock seat? Most of the GL1000 pics I see have a much flatter seat, but maybe this was a factory option or something?

Thanks,
Jai

Just as a side note,,,, the oe 75-76 seats are literally ball-busters, just a piece of vinyl covering a well rounded log, just a terrible seat ! The 76 LTd seat is the same as the 77’s and is really not bad at all, I had one on my 76 (a77) and rode lots of distances with it, pretty good! I sold it (mistake) to a guy to make his restoration correct and went to a Hang-2 bucket seat that was ok but not as good as the 77 before it.

I have a 78/79 on it now that’s better than the Hang-2 but not as good as the 77 in my opinion. Again in my opinion the standard 75-76 seat is one of the very worst bike seats I’ve ever experienced, so unless you’re looking for a 100pt restoration avoid the 75-76 oe seat. My .02

The seat in your picture above is for a 78-79 (you didn’t say what year your bike is) you can tell because the front edge is slanted back whereas on a 75-77 the front edge is straight, all due to the rear tank shape.

redglbx, I can agree with you all the way about the 75-76 seats.

I have a 75-76 seat that I recovered and find it very comfortable. Now, ANY K&Q for a 1000 shoves the "package" into the shelter, even worse upon braking.

This ^. I also had a 79 aftermarket seat, I've seen them offered for sale, very heavy slick vinyl on a stock pan. It was just awful. I made the mistake of riding it 15 hours straight once and was sore for a week after.
An old winger said there aren't any bad seats, you just aren't used to it. He was very wrong. I peeled it back, cut the foam flat and angled towards the middle instead of the tank. Left some space for boy parts. lol. It was much better afterwards.
I ride a stock 78 seat now and like it.

This clarification on the saddles is interesting, but I have seen LTD with the saddle identical to the 75/76 model, and LTD with the saddle similar to the following model, but with different numbers of stitching bands. is this difference due to the year of manufacture or the country for which the motorcycle was intended?

I do not know. There are differences on regular GL1000's depending on the market country but I was not aware of any for the LTD.

All of the LTD’s I’ve seen which is quite a few have had the same seat as the 77’s , being that they were all handbuilt in Japan and only 2000 built I’d have to say that anything else is just a modified seat. The mythical brown LTD or actual leather seats in my opinion may just be dealer deals because they were doing a lot of that to hype them and sell them for more money.

Honda’s advertising back then was sketchy at best on the LTD’s and alluded to the seats being leather but they weren’t, just molded vinyl like the normal GL’s but those seats were quite comfy for a distance ride vs the standard 75-76 ball busters.

As a side note I really wanted the LTD when I bought my Red 76 but all the dealers were taking bids and doing a lot to keep them on “display” as long as possible and drive the bids up. All of the LTD’s I was following hoping to buy one were up around $5200-$6k when I finally threw in the towel and bought my red 76.

Funny thing is that they had discounted the heck out of the yellow 76’s because they couldn’t give those away and now they’re fairly collectable. The yellow bikes in my area were being listed at $2300 vs a $3299 msrp.
