Where to start

Hey all,
I'm finally getting ready to start work on my '82 gl1100 STD tomorrow. I can get the bike to crank with carb cleaner but it won't stay running so I decided to buy a carb rebuild kit from randakks. Don't know how old the timing belts are so I got everything I need to do the timing belts/replace coolant & couple other things from the new2u post.

So my question is - start with the timing belts/coolant new2u items or with the carb rebuild (get it running, then change out the belts ect).

Me I would do the belts first just as a precaution. plus they are relatively quick compared to a carb rebuild.

+1 on whiskerfish's above. Tackle one thing at a time, especially if you're relatively new to the bike. It's much easier to troubleshoot your work (I'm not implying you'll make any mistakes, but we all do from time to time), as well as systematically working through the renewal process. Take your time and ask questions as you go along. Good wrenchin!

I would do the carbs and the belts. I have a bike here right now because owner changed it over to neon coils. Had good spark but bike would not start. I rebuilt the carbs and it fired right up. If I just changed the belts it still would not have started.

You already stated "it won't run unless on carb cleaner". So you know the carbs are going to have to come off.

I have to agree with Robin. If everything went perfectly (it never does) and replacing the belts went without a hitch it's still easy to make a mistake that could end up driving you nuts. You already know that the engine will start, so it is assumed that the cam timing is OK. If you do the carbs first and verify that the engine will fire, then move on to the belts, you can eliminate the possibility of not knowing if the cause of a no start is carb or cam timing related. just my 2 cents
