1978 gl1000 turn signal mounting bolts

#1

Post by Jonesz »

Can someone tell me if there is any difference between the front and rear turn signal mounting mounting bolts on a 1978 vs an earlier wing. I know that the earlier rear turn signals mount to the seat rail while the 78 turn signals mount to the tail light, however while shopping for these bolts I see Saber Cycle has one they say will fit up to 1978. The ? I have is the parts numbers are different so wondering about different thread size or whatever. The front turn signal bolts also look the same but parts #'s are different. Hope this isn't too confusing. Was going to get some made as they are unobtainium OEM but if these fit I would way further ahead $ wise.
I have been looking at these:

and

Thanx for any info

No if you look at my links 5speed you will see that I mean the mounting stem itself. I am referring to the part that threads into the headlight ears/tail light bracket. Check'em out if you would as I know you have a 78 too. Don't know if you have the oem stems though.

Now why would |I look at the links?
My 78 had a fairing on it so I don't have the fork mounted lights unfortunately.

Thanx all and I understand the Saber cycle warning Robin. Still wondering tho if a mounting stalk off and earlier wing will fit (same thread size) as a 1978 gl1000? I am guessing someone here has tried to do that.

I'll see if I can get at my 76 and check the stalk on it.

Thanx 5 speed, would appreciate it. BTW even if I found out the proper thread size for the stalk (am leaning toward 14mm with 1.5 pitch) I might be able to shop for a bolt that would fit online. Could then drill the bolt to accept the wiring. But as stated I really would like to know if the mounting stalks from an earlier gl1000 would fit a 78. That would save me a whole bunch of hacking as I would then order the Saber Cycle ones and be done with it.

My apologies to you Robin. I was thinking ow bad could these people be? I had asked them specifically before I ordered if the rear mounting studs fit a 1978 gl1000 as advertised. I even gave them the 14 mm thread size and 1.5 pitch needed. They wrote to tell me that they had sold many of the rear mounts with no problem from customers. They arrived today and they are wrong size for a 1978. May be OK for an earlier gl1000 but not my bike. Had them shipped to a friend who was stateside for the winter and now cannot return them. I am now a member of your club!

Don't sweat it 5speed. I now know that the thread size on the rear is the same as the front signals. Will have to try find an adapter of sorts to mount the ones Saber Cycle sent to me. May have to drill and tap a 14mm bolt to use as a reducer. Thanks anyway.
