Behemoth gl1200 custom.....

This is my newly acquired 86 gl1200. My brother in law gave it to me because he hasn't ridden it in a few years and doesn't plan to ride anymore. Surprisingly it is in better condition than I thought it would be in for a bike that has been store in the open weather. But that aside, I'm not a restoration kind of guy. I like to modify everything. And just a warning, I take my dear sweet time, lol. I'll try to keep up with the thread as much as possible. I already started striping her down the other night...

Even has the Aspencade bag and tool kit still intact. I have some zx7r forks I'm thinking about trying on this bird.

Good start, and don't worry about how long your project takes. I started in 2012 and although I can ride mine, there's still stuff I want to do, including re-doing some things!

Glad to see another build thread started.
Looks like you jumped in head first.
Good luck building your masterpiece, we will be watching, patiently.

I have seen it many times, and done it myself, but it is still amazing to see how much stuff comes off just to get down to the motorcycle underneath! Good luck with your project.

Got out and mocked up the 02 ZX7r Forks yesterday, with the stock front wheel. I'm going to try to get my father in law to machine the brake rotor adapter/spacers for me and a new upper triple tree. Going to the bearing house next week to find a set of sealed bearings for the front wheel so I can use the zx7r front axle. We also pulled the muffler/s. The pipes were rotted out at the joint where they slip on. All 4 clamp bolts snapped off and the muffler slowly lowered itself to the floor, lol. Also turns out the rear seat frame is twisted a little, so I'll have to straiten that out.

Headers--that is where they always rust for some reason. Can be repaired of course. Those forks look like a good match for the bike. Wish my father-in-law was a machinist! Or better yet, wish I was one.

Fun project. Will be watching. This is the point (stripped down) at which I detail all the nooks and crannies - assuming you've already determined that she's a decent runner. I may be more "anal" than some, but I enjoy having a machine that's clean to the bone. The old dressers hide a lot of grime under all that plastic. Of course, that level of detailing takes place during lulls in the action - like when you're waiting on a $5 widget that has you shut down.

Considering all the dirt dobber nests I've removed, It's definitely getting a hose down. I won't be doing any serious detailing until all the fabrication and paintwork is done. IF it gets painted, lol. I tend to favor the madmax look, but we'll see. I had even considered riding it with no bodywork, with all the guts exposed for a bit. I love the reactions you get from people when they see something like that.

My little brother has been staying with us and helping me in the shop. He mocked up some stuff the other day while I was at work, I think its going to look pretty sick. KZ1000 tail, Suzuki Katana seat, and Suzuki gs850g tank (gutted). keep in mind this stuff is just basically sitting on the bike, not fully fitted yet.
