Question about mating 1000 points case to 1100 head

I'm working on preparing my "new" ('82) 1100 engine to replace the '79 100 that has been in my '83 for the last 21 years. The plan is to keep the '79 carbs and the Dyna S ignition and use the cams from my '77 parts engine.

I am working on the heads and I just realized that the place where the points case bolts onto the 1000 head has a straight sided recess for the shoulder on the case to fit into but the on 1100 head the opening has a shallow bevel.

I have a couple of ideas about how to make this work but I'd like to know how others that have done this made it fit before I commit to something that might not give ideal results.

I’ve never seen pics, but I know joe drum did it grinding a little off one piece. I haven’t looked at mine, but I think it was the mount for the 1000 that needed work. Either grinding down the lip on the mounting piece or making a spacer to get it to seal. I guess the cam length will tell you which to do.

I think Hukmut did it on his recent build Cosicud . No pics or description.

If the points case isn't correctly mounted , centered with the camshaft centerline and square with the cylinder head, the probability of Dyna S rotor contact with at least one of the two Dyna pickups, is imminent. Seemingly, a good lathe would take care of modifying the depth of the GL1000 points case pilot, and matching the bevel angle in the 1100 cylinder head.

You already know that, though. tumb2

That's kind of what I thought. I think I need to talk to someone that has done this (or at least read a thread that covers it) before I go much farther....

What happened to Joedrum? I tried looking him up in the Members List but he's not there so I searched for a thread he had posted in and when I clicked his name it said "The requested user does not exist."

Hmmmmm...All I did was put 1000 heads on Zonker, and kept my Dyna. The important thing to remember is if you do so,Use the head gasket for the size block you plan to put the heads on.

Worrying about the amount in the slop of the holes? Isn’t an 1100 head the same as 1000 head? The holes are there for the mounting and should be centered, but I can’t say for sure. The C5 setup - last I knew - utilized the same setup, just had cams drilled for the center. It looks to me like it’s just the slight recess to accept the mounting hardware. I guess the C5 can have a smaller degree of error and still read, whereas the Dyna , as Cliff mentioned, would vary its reading a little bit. A machine shop could get it right, but then a 1000 head would probably be just as cheap.

There is a little play in the through holes in the case so relying on the bolts to locate it wouldn't be accurate enough.

With no definitive answer on how Joe did it and him no longer around to tell me what he did I decided I was on my own so I modified the case to fit. Pics & more info here.
