Frame bolts and bolt holes as well as exhaust bolts

#1

Post by gdonlo04 »

working on my 1975 and 1978 gl 1000. The exhaust manifold bolts are very rusty and almost no thread left. one came out. How do I replace the exhaust manifold bolts? there is not a visible spot to place a wrench on them.
The frame bolt holes. do I re-tap them?
what about the bolts. do I drill them our of the frame and replace them? These are permanent. Do I weld the new one in and where can I but these? or do I re-tap them.

They make special sockets for removing studs. If you still have treads, try double nutting on the threads, and removing them with a socket or wrench

Yea double or even triple nut them. If they are bad use a penetrant like kroil or PB Blaster and give it time to work. If you break one off it can turn into a nasty job.

I have a bunch of them, exhaust bolts, if you need some let me know..as said above double/triple nut and remove..50/50 ATF/acetone the best solvent..hard to get it "up" those bolts...give it time 24 hours reapply try and then again.

Yeah, it's worth taking some time here and letting the penetrant do its job. Beats the heck out of fighting to extract one while standing on your head.

I get the double nut on the exhaust bolts. yes I will need more. how do I order them? . Thanks I will try it on my salvage engine first as a test of skill.

What about the frame bolt thread. do I re0tap or drill out and replace? what do I replace with?

the female receptor on the frame. do I re-tap if too rusty?
Thanks

How about a picture of the frame bolt in question. Maybe I'm just dense today, but I can't envision which one you're talking about.

I replaced the exhaust studs with a plain metric bolt that I got at Lowes.

I think you are talking about the studs that the removable frame section slides onto??
If the threads on those are bogered up I would rethread them without hesitation.

The one on my 83 that also acts as the stud for the left foot peg was broken when I got it, no threads to save so I had to drill it out and run a bolt through instead.

Had a broken exhaust stud on a GT750. There wasn't enough of the stud left to grab it, but I was able to weld a 3/8" nut over what was left. Worked well, used a socket and it came out.
