I managed to destroy the "box assembly" on my 79 Wing, yunno the speedo drive unit on the front wheel that turns the speedo cable.
I wonder if anyone could duplicate what happened. I was pumping the front end to see if the forks seals were leaking. They were dry so I backed out of the driveway and drove a few feet snapping the speedo cable and breaking off the blade in the box assembly that drives the cable. The combination of pumping and backing up had moved the unit to an unnatural position which broke the parts mentioned. The assembly pivots so as to not strain the cable while riding. Good times.

Re: Don't do this
No it doesn't. It stays stationary.. If it's rotating, your axle nut is not tight enough.

Re: Don't do this
There is a very small tab on the bottom of the RH fork that the box should rest against to prevent it from rotating.

Re: Don't do this
Yeah, just checked my friends 76. On the 78/9 it's on the left side. Another over-think on my part. Wanted the wheel on the axle smooth with no play but not too tight. I'm gonna wreck this bike yet........

Re: Don't do this
This group has is great. Couldn't find a a stop tab although I remembered one in the past. Checked my spare Comstar with the spare box assembly as well but I do have a beer with a shot of Jameson in me..... Snugged up the axle and re-torqued the fork/axle nuts. No play & good to go with the box. Thanks guys. What can I break next?

Lucky you didn't ride it with the front wheel loose. Could have been posting this from the ER!

Re: Don't do this
That's the funny part. Made sure the wheel was snug, no play. Guess tighter was needed to squeeze the box. Been riding since the 70s and still in one piece. (OK, I crashed on the 3 month mark)
