left side it not running right

#1

Post by Daveb624 »

ok so I have an 86 Goldwing that I just got.I'm told its been sitting five years or so. running rough. here is what ive done so far. now plugs. ngk. cleaned the carbs and put new float needles, ive run a can of sea foam through, cleaned all the vacuum lines. I have good spark on all four cyl. been through 3 tanks of fuel. now, on idle I can pull the wires off the left side with no change. If I pull off just the right side it quits. needless to say the left is not firing? but If I pull the two right side and start it, it will run rough and lots of black smoke. I go down the road and it will go very well for a bit and then bog. ive tried opening the choke some to see if it changes anything. nothing. I have sprayed carb clean around the boots and vac lines and no rev up. I have changed plugs three times. I am at wits end guys. any help would be great.

Please describe in detail what you did to "clean the carbs". The GL carbs can be very finicky if not cleaned completely and properly.

pulled the jets and cleaned with carb clean and blew them out. pulled the float pin to get at the needle. before putting the new needle in I cleaned inside with a q tip and then readjusted the floats. sprayed carb clean in any and all the holes I could find and made sure it had an exit point. Please tell me I missed something. I am getting good at taking these carbs off. by the way its a gl1200 if that matters. also bench synced them. so I don't think its a sync issue

Were you able to remove the main jet holder and clean out the cross drilled holes? Also, did you remove and clean the idle mixture screws? You may need to drill out the anti tamper screw if it's never been removed. When you remove the plugs from the dead cylinders, are they dry, black and gas soaked, or black and sooty?

Any fuel on the plenum floor after it runs a bit? Sounds like it could be floats. Since it runs ok for a short time then acts up. It starts getting too much fuel and start causing the problem. Float height or dirty sticky float valves maybe.
