The overflow reservoir is for the radiator.
The leak while on the sidestand would likely come from one of three sources:
1. waterpump weephole
2. valve cover gasket
3. shifter shaft seal

A dollar says its the shifter seal. When the bike is on the side stand, the oil leaks from the seal onto the motor and stand. Easy replacement.

+1 on the shift shaft seal. Cheap and easy fix.

yes you need the coolant reservoir... or else you will end up with air in the system and eventually low coolant

I use a metal bottle near the front down tube. W0rka best if the bottle is mounted higher then the top of the radiator

On 1100s the seal at the rear of the left head where on a 1000 the points are located often leaks due to age. I've seen this several times. You can no longer get a replacement. I have been able to fix every instance of a leak in this location by removing the round (ish) cover and thoroughly cleaning that seal. Use alcohol as a final cleaner. Make sure all oil and grease is removed. Once cleaned you can seal around the edge of that seal with common silicone sealant. Allow to completely cure before testing it. Do this with the bike upright as if on the center stand that way no oil from inside the head will try to leak out through the seal while you are cleaning it and while the silicone cures.
