New guy looking at getting a rough 77

#1

Post by DaveyG »

Hey all, new to this site, but not to bikes. Got my first dirt flinger back in 1998, my first roadie (a 1981 CB650) in 2004, and have since had an ongoing love affair with bikes of various sizes and uses since, from the big American V-twins to old ratty drug outta the ditch old Yamahas, I've done a few resto-mods, a few 'bobbers' and a cafe. I've got a fellow trying to talk me into a 77 GL1000 today, and after a year of not having a road bike, I think it's just the ticket to punch and get me back on two wheels. I'm sure I'll have myriad questions as I bring it back from the grave (been sitting for several years) but hopefully I'll have some good to give back to the group as it progresses. Will upload a pic this evening, in all her glory. Thanks in advance for having me, and for the questions I'll surely have answered in the future!

Ah yes the 5 posts rule. Well, I've got a pic from the seller, as well as the usual "PO took apart the carbs and the pieces are all in this box" story haha.

Yeah I know step one is fuel delivery. It's just that it seems all the good deals I find already have the carbs off and in pieces in a box (and usually missing 3 or 4 small bits and pieces)

Fifth post. Well, the bike is getting dropped off today. Time to find out if the wife really meant it when she said, "if you get one more damn fixer upper motorcycle, I'm leaving you!"

Well, it's official! She is in my 'RV bay parking area' on the side next to my garage. Box of misc pieces are inside. Looks like whoever ditched the carbs was fairly meticulous, seeing as how each bowl is taped to each body, yet all the springs and small pieces (or maybe they are extras) are in a little Tupperware container with a lid... I'm a little leery of it seeing as the linkage and cables are all just tossed into the box... I'm pretty good at this crap if I'm the one that took it apart, but I guess that's what the included service manual is for. Also came with a set of homebuilt intake flanges (steel with short tubes brazed on) like whoever started the project planned to create maybe some kind of single carb adaptor manifold perhaps? Or megasquirt fuel injection? No idea... Anyway, with any luck, I'll have the carbs sorted out and put back on before long. Plus side, both brakes grab and aren't frozen solid inside the calipers like my last Yamaproject, the fronts are just a tad squishy, so maybe just a good bleeding and they'll be serviceable (may need to swap lines in the future...)
On to the pics!
