Hot...wont starting

Post by UK_Andy »

Iv noticed this on my wing recently but at first thought it was a duff battery, but its not.

When hot, temp guage halfway and i stop then it won't turn over to start. You can hear it go but just won't turn, any ideas?

It kinda goes but then stops as if it is stuck

Connections and cables as mentioned is easy to check, and another issue that pops up is the starter its self with the plate that the commutator brushes are mounted to. The plate gets its only ground through the clamp force between the end cap and the motor body and this can become loose or corroded and when hot it can not work well. If it starts ok when it cools off this can be the problem. Usually easy to fix after removing the starter and cleaning the commutator and the brush plate and the three little tabs that secure it when the cap screws are tightened slightly bending the tabs a little more can help get a better connection. The plate is kind of sandwiched between the cap and motor body. There is a couple write-ups here that may explain it better. One major concern it that you must hold the inner nut with a very thin 10mm wrench when removing/installing the cable nut. If the stud turns it will damage the field winding connections which is bad and more difficult to repair. Be aware that there are several thin washers that are on the motor shaft that can fall off when the cap is removed.

I think this condition can be caused by carbon buildup in the combustion chamber (top of pistons, valves). When the engine is hot, the increase in compression ratio and presence of hot or glowing carbon could cause a pre-ignition which fights the starter by trying to turn the engine backwards. Not saying that's it, but worth a look.

Would take one heck of a lot of carbon. This is a very common problem and in every case I know it's the starter. It needs to be cleaned as others have suggested. Also wouldn't hurt to put in new brushes. I think still available aftermarket and OEM. I've only done a couple that didn't need new brushes and were just dirty and that brush mounting plate needed cleaned and those tabs bent back down a little.

bab or going bad starter The same thing happened to mine.
I have done so much with so little for so long, I think I could do anything with nothing at all, in no time flat. My best friend Buddy (my service dog) loves to ride as much as I do.!!! I would hope everyone would use a product called (Ride On) sealant & Balancer, in their tires, because it has saved my life.

My initial thought that its toooooooo far advanced.....

Have you played with the timing lately???

If not, check that the backing (points) plate has not come loose and while your there "static" check the timing....

Yes i know its a PITA, but its the simple things, thats created a superb bike!!!!
