It is pretty clear in the manual.
You have one. If not I can copy the instructions down for you.

I found my Haynes manual in a box of parts down at my storage unit.
the following is plagerized from said manual.
If someone sees something wrong here SPEAK UP! I will edit

Adjusting the valve clearances. (Engine Cold)

Rotate the engine until both valves on No.1 cylinder are fully closed and the ‘T-1’ mark on the flywheel is aligned with the index marks. With the crankshaft in this position, number 1 piston is at TDC. Check the following valves by placing a 0.004â€ÂÂ

Alot of riders skip this step. Valve lashing your motor is a vital maintenance procedure and should be taken seriously and accurately!!!!

Lars
About that second illustration, is that from the standard manual or one of your personal references? It is a very interesting illustration and one I do not recall seeing before?

Hi Steve
Yep
It's from the original 1975 Honda Workshop Manual that I have,
not the (later) reprint. (in which one will not find it).
