Dual Sport Tires

#1

Post by commitedskater15 »

Gentlemen! I have scoured the internet tirelessly (pun) in search for a dual sport tire to fit on the rear of my 1982 GL1100. I leave for Central America on May 1st and need a tire that can handle a little gravel as well as stand up to the thousands of miles that will be put on through Mexico.

It seems as if no one is making anything for a 16 Inch rim?!?! Any recommendations as to what ADV tire i should go with would be very appreciated seeing as how i am fairly new to selecting tires.
Thanks, Art.

Duro HF 904 Median Dual Sport Rear Tire.
I have no idea what it's like, just found it in a search. It's a 130/90-16.
I'm curious why it's rated at "60% street and 40% off-road".

Apparently that tire is on backorder everywhere across the country, has anyone else had this problem? Is there a different all purpose tire for touring that would fit a 16 inch rim that would instill confidence on a gravel/loose road?

comittedskater15,
I have fond memories of steamboat springs. We stopped there on a trip to Sturgis in 96 and found a great Mexican restaurant. Ordered Top Shelf Margaritas for my wife and I; the bartender made a huge blender full and just kept refilling our glasses for the cost of one. The food was good also as well as I can remember. LOL

I recently put dual sport tires on my 76 GL1000. I am a very firm advocate for the Metzeler Tourance enduro tires. They are outstanding. Tremendously grippy on the street, and enough tread to get you over some dirt roads and gravel.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14 ... -rear-tire
Is a smaller REAR tire (120/90-16) that's in stock.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice Earl43P already found it

The reason I'm searching is I'm thinking of using a '86 front end on my next '78 build with this tire.

Anyone see a issue with using a rear tire on the front? Or is that opening a can of worms? :IDTS:

I have a rear tire on the front of my 93, Michelin Pilot Activ.
Works good, no worms.
I mounted it reverse direction to match the E3 siping.
That machine feels well-planted especially in turns, ATT on the rear (Austone taxi tire).

My Valkyrie is getting a rear tire on the front when this Shinko wears down more.

Oops. Missed that. I ordered some Shinko 230 Tour Masters today. Decidedly not dual sport but I also ordered a Fly Racing Vintage Bend Chrome Handlebar. Old style Scrambler/Off Road bar to confuse the styling of the bike. It is wide and strong and will be very comfy. Maybe I'll have to find an old '78 Honda crossbar pad to complete the confusion.
