is the 84 stator unique?

#1

Post by pugetsoundsailer »

I'm getting mixed messages, got a ebay seller saying saying his stators will only fit 85 and up.
Then others saying the 85 stator will fit the 84, what gives???

Hi, the stators are all the same from what I know, 1000, 1100, 1200 are all the same.

Some 1200's had a larger stator, the 85, maybe just the LTD, but I think 85 and up were a bit different. They had a little more juice.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

This is 'quote'-as far as I know:

The same stator will fit all 1000,1100 and non-injected 1200

That said, the original 1000/1100s were rated at 300 watts and the 1200s were rated at 350.

The injection models had a bigger stator and rotor and were rated at 500. They also have a bigger rear engine case to accommodate it.

one thing that is different is the pulsar hangs off the back end on the 84 and it is ties to the front shaft (and pully for the timing gears) 85-87. And yes the Ltd is different

I'm pretty sure all the 1200s, other than the FI LTD, had the same stator. 350 or 360 watts, don't remember for sure. I looked once for Ricks Electrics stator and it showed the same part number for 1000 1100 and 1200 as I remember.

if that is so, then the still available OEM stator for the 1200 should fit into a 1000??

The 84 was a one year only engine. The whole thing was comprehensively overhauled for the 85 on models.
Crankcase, rear case, clutch cover, etc. None of these interchangeable with the 84.
The front-of-crank ignition system pick-ups also have mounting points on the block, if I remember rightly.

So I guess the answer is no.

I have a stator out of an '84 I have no need of, pretty sure it's good. Have to check, pulled it out of an '84 engine from a Std.(swallowed a valve). Shoot me an email at stuffy402@aol.com if interested.

I think the general feeling is yes, but no one is for sure.

What I do know is that honda had problems with the stators failing in the 84's and most of them were replaced before the 80's were even over. It is possible that a different part # reflects the changes they made after those failures.

Sort of like the part # for the drive shaft changed during the 1000 series. The later ones had a better u-joint, but they all interchange

When I get back out to OK, I will check as I have a new stator to put into our 1200, and I can compare it to a used 100 stator I have on the shelf. The other option is that I have a used 78 engine that needs the rear case gasket replaced, and I can pull that and see if the 1200 stator actually fits
