81 interstate stereo tuner not working

Good day folks- all replies appreciated
As I said above I have a 81 1100 interstate that is new to me and the radio's tuner buttons "up" and "down" are not functioning. Any thoughts on how to fix or "clean" these? DO I have to remove the whole stereo or can I fix it just by removing the screw on the (I assume) face plate? Is this typically a corrosion issue that cen be cleaned with some emory paper behind the buttons or ....?
