the covers were all chromed, but as you can see that is gone. It turned over by hand really well.... and the belts look good--maybe I should sell them on ebay

That is pretty typical around here. Looks like the bike it was living in was stored outside in a salty atmosphere.

I bought my 1986 Interstate from my favourite bike shop, it was sitting down the back of the shop looking unloved one Saturday morning when I dropped in to get some new tyres for my CX500, so I enquired as to it's condition and Jeff, the proprieter told me that the PO hadn't done an oil and filter change in at least 10 years, and the bearings were all shot.

The then owner objected to Jeff's repair quote, and owed him some money for the work done so far, so he told Jeff he could keep it. Jeff offered it to me for $450 including delivery, so I jumped at it. I thought about rebuilding the original engine, but after checking out engines on eBay in the USA (my model wasn't officially imported into Oz, so very few made it here) I found a low mileage (26000) one at a wreckers yard in Michigan, and the seller was happy to ship it to Oz.

The engine was $600, and shipping another $590. By the time I got screwed here with agents fees, government charges, unloading, storage etc, the total blew out to just under $2000, but swapping out an engine was still a better proposition (for me) than rebuilding mine, and because the seller was so honest with the engine's description, there were no nasty surprises, and the engine's never missed a beat since I installed it.

The bike now owes me around $3500 which is still cheap here, so if I sold it (unlikely) I'd get my money back. Surprisingly enough, the insurance value is $8000, so if it ever does break down miles from nowhere, I'll push it down a ravine! (jokes) I hope this new trend of stripping engines and just selling the internal parts doesn't wipe out the good used engine market, or folks like me won't be as keen to put these old beasts back on the road when they stumble and fall. Cheers, Terry.
