1976 GL1000 Cafe Racer Sweden

#1

Post by Swedeflyer »

Hi!

My name is Christian and I'm a GL1000 owner from Sweden. I'm a guitar teacher and freelance guitarist who enjoy fencing (active fencer and fencing coach), old british cars and of course motorcycles.

I have had quite a few bikes over the years but this is my first GW. My mom and dad had a GL1500 and I have borrowed it quite a lot... The GL1000 how ever is my favorite bike. I stumbled across this at a friends house and bought it for a couple of hundred.

It's in pretty bad shape but thats the way I like it! ;)

It's gonna be a cafe race (surprise...) and I have two different styling themes to choose from.

Being a Swede born in the seventies, my first hero was the late Swedish F1 driver Ronnie Petersson. he raced for Lotus in the classic John Player Special cars. So, a black bike with gold trim and logos is cool. Nice tribute.
Or I would like it to be a tribute to the 60's and 70's "Gulf" sponsored race cars like the old Porsches (the movie Le Mans with Steve McQueen). Imagine a light blue bike with the orange stripe and the Gulf logos... Mmmmm

Ok... What I have to do is:

New front fork. The current one is to badly pitted on the inner tubes... Got a pair of Ebay yesterday! :)
New brakes (probably). They are really stuck, and my experience from cars is that they will never be good again once they go bad...
New cam belts.
Carb overhaul

Styling:
New saddle
Clubman handlebars
BIG tacho in the middle and a small speedo.
New front headlight (lowered compared to the original position).
Paint, paint, paint... patience, patience, patience, patience... ;)

The engine is no looker... All the chrome has lifted from the parts so it need some attention...

I'll try to keep You all updated on my progress!

Welcome aboard from Indiana. The brakes may be salvageable. I've brought some back that were pretty bad before. You would have pretty much the same time and money in used brakes that would these. Unless you found some that you knew had been recently rebuilt.

Thanx for the warm welcome!

I must apology in advance for my sometimes crappy english, but I hope You all understand what I am trying to say... ;)

I know the engine runs but I will not do any start attempts until the timing belts are changed and all the rubber gaskets are changed. I don't want anything nasty to happen...

So, the wheels are called "Lester wheels"? What bike do they come from? GW? I was thinking about getting a pair of original spoke wheels, but have heard that they are less stabile. Thoughts?

@dl1000 Yupp. The Black/gold was my first thought...

Any thoughts on the wheels? I was thinking Gold spokes with polished sides.

Welcome from New York state.

"Lester" is the aftermarket wheel manufacturer's name.

(There's a very informative compilation of information on the history of the Lester company to be found in the cornucopia of NGW Club topics. )

Welcome from Michigan.
I can help a little bit with the clubman bar fitment (need to alter the fork stops, shorten cables, etc).
I like the John Player color scheme idea.
That bike came with spoke wheels to going back to them won't be an issue. Black rims (with a gold pinstripe) and black hubs laced with gold spokes might be a look.

Ahh! So the clubman style isn't working straight on... I'll check Your album for some ideas! :)

Since I am a sucker for British stuff I like the old "Rickman" racer style, so the spokes would actually be my wheel of choice, but hey... I like the Lesters. Maybe if I could make a straight swap for a pair of REALLY good spokes I would consider it! :) Gaaahhhh... Choices, choices, choices...

Tomorrow I'll tear the breaks apart and really examine them. Gotta get my camera working so I can take some more pics for You all to see! :)
