My first Wing
So my friend who's never on a bike at our summer bike meet, got this '76 GL1000 for christmas from his girlfriend. He wants a chopper so he put it up for sale.
More cash than I had or wanted to pay for another bike, although still under a grand.
He made a deal and it fell through, so it was back up for less.
So I'm scanning Facebook, notice it's back on the market and my wife asked "how much?".
5 bills was good enough and she said get it, we still got tax money from refund, sooooooooooooo
Who am I to argue with that kind of logic?
And since he was driving to Illinois to pick up a chopper, he dropped it off to me this morning.
Woke up at 6am today and the Wing was on it's way.
Ramps buried under snow god knows where in my yard, so with a few ratchet straps and an engine hoist, lifted it up and drove the 2500 Dodge 4X4 out from under it.
Front tire flat, but looks new. Front brakes locked up., good enough till daylight.
Broke the Banjo bolt loose @ MC and whacked the calipers with a rubber mallet and she rolls smooth and freely.
Quick eyeball inspection once in the shop.
Motor looks clean, no signs of leaking fuel, a little oily dirt around the output shaft, inside of carb plenum looks spotless.
Lesters need some cleanup, especially the back.
PO put the pipes on backwards, left on right, right on left...lol
Got some nice turnout cans with nice chrome.
Gas cap vent is not venting, might be why my friend got it to fire but not run?
Gonna try cleaning out the fuel tank and run some fresh fuel and seafoam through it.
Need a battery, oil and filter change and try to get it to run so I can read the plugs.
Has Dyna ignition.
Well that's day 1 of my first GoldWing. I'll be posting more and asking lots of questions.

Hello n' welcome Sprocket. Looks like you got a pretty good deal there. You might want to replace the timing belts before running it too much.

Re: My first Wing
For sure on the belts, just wanna make sure it runs with no nasty sounds from down low.... errr in the middle...lmao
Shocks need bushings and retainer washers, flush cooling system... lots of little things to do.
I need this thing running reliable for a 1500 mile round trip plus miles during the meet by mid June.
Towing a Time Out pop-up, riding 2 up from Detroit to Wilkesboro North Carolina.

If they accepted appendages, I'd have a Time Out, too. Those things are awesome.

Re: My first Wing
El Taco, we got the tie-out about 6-7 years ago and pulled it with a small car to where we had a membership. Was REAL cheap way to spend the summer.
I've been towing it behind my old school rigid CB750 chop for at least 4 years, have rebuilt the whole enclosure, and plan to improve on that possibly this summer to lighten it up.
I replaced the rotted chip-board with 1/2" oak plywood and routered v grooves on the inside surfaces to simulate hardwood flooring. Heavy but solid. Gotta seal it completely though, or the plies will separate.
Roady, rubber is always at a premium. I rarely drive a cage if it's dry and 45-50*F. Once summer hits, my chop has been daily driver/work truck (that timeout camper comes off the frame and replaced with utility box). I got an XS1100 on the floor that's getting raked and slammed that is gonna eat rubber like fuel.
And in total, have 12 complete bikes, of which 4 are current projects, hoping to finish this and 2 others in the next few months.
Grand aspirations considering riding season is so close I can taste it :D
This is for now, the bike I won't start cutting on... at least till I get another one...lol... or the other one will get chopped and hotrodded :D it's a disease, been like this since I was tearing apart my first bicycle.

I should take this as inspiration to do the same, as I'm about stuck with a truck for hauling tools. Been considering a simple frame, then dropping a roof mount cargo box on it with a hole and little windshield for the dog. Could easily come off and be replaced with a service bed of some sort, but I haul a lot of weight. I downsize all the time, only to find that I immediately need all the things I left behind.
I'm interested, can you provide some details? Maybe some pics? What kind of weight/tools are you carrying?

OOPS, forgot the pic link http://s1165.photobucket.com/user/chopp ... t=3&page=1
Not sure of weight, I think the camper rig loaded is around 1000#, but never weighed it.
There's 4 Yammy XS650 motors and 2 frames in the trailer, hauled them about 300 miles with no complaint from the bike. To be fair, my chop had an 836 big bore and a big cam, but not much problem for the stock CB750 motor in it now, just he clutch a workout leaving from a stop. My 836 was prob close to the 82hp of early wings, although the bike is too long for any of the local dynos, so never did a pull on it.
Side note, that 836 is apart for a 970 big bore
that's why the stock motor for now.
I have a friend in upstate New York that did the car-top carrier on a frame of unistrut tubing and an axle from tractor supply. He was on the road for a few months last summer just traveling around the eastern seaboard, New England to FL and all points between.

Re: My first Wing
More pics later today, got the Windjammer off, removed that hideous tail light, trial fit the new seat and it fits nicely. Wife wants a backrest, so I gotta build a removable one.
Charged battery overnight, dead after a few starter clicks...
Gonna swap the pipes back today and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN.
This bike might look clean on the outside, but there's dust and dirt from almost 30 years under the seat and covers/shelters...lol... all in all looks good though, not much rust if any on the frame, and that's just around service hardware from wrenches turning. usual pitting of chrome under the seat.
Front Lester is beautiful, the rear needs a lot of cleaning and a polish job.
Tried to remove the pullback handlebar risers, and ONE bolt has a broken allen wrench stuck in it!
I cannot/will not ride with the bars that close.
Looks more like a motorcycle every day :D

I still have a top clamp with two bolts broken off in it. Was able to remove one side, but the other is flat welded, even though there's two inches of stud sticking out on each. Homemade risers for you.

Re: My first Wing
SHE'S NEKKID!!!!!
Took a few hours Sunday workin' on the wing.
Dayum the Windjammer on my CB750 was a lot easier to remove than this one...lol... dang rad shrouds in the way...
Tail light gone, will prob get a Tombstone. I like the shapes of the fenders and might get them pinstriped.
Fit up my Superior seat from the CB750 and it flows nicely. Narrower in the front seat, more space for wifey in back, and kindof a fastback look down to the fender. Nice trim strip around the bottom too. I'll get a pic of the original seat next to it for comparison.
I'm still laughing at the pipes on backward...lmao...gonna get the motor running before I swap them, no telling how bad the gaskets are and rather buy everything at once.
