cx drive shaft

Ok guru or not I am going to ask for some help. I am building or trying to build a radical CX.
I have however come upon a stumbling block. I want to marry the front of a CX drive shaft to the rear of a GL drive shaft. I was wondering if anyone has done this. It looks as though the bearing are kept in the u joint by a special nut. It could however be a crimped fastener. Any input would be much appreciated.

Ok so hours after this post I contacted a guy in Canada who can do this modification for me. Thanks I will post the results when done.

I'm interested in the planned end result of this mod. Changing wheels, differential, to change the gear ratio? I haven't looked up the differences there may be between the CX500 and GL drive gearing. I wish Honda had put in a 6th gear for most of the bikes I've had.

Um.... Which CX and which GL are you talking about? If you mean a CX500 and a GL500 the parts will fit without modification. The same goes for some of the 650s. More info here http://cx500forum.com/cs/forums/7048/ShowPost.aspx

FWIW, Eccles has a CX650E engine & Frame with a GL500 final shaft, driveshaft/u-joint & swingarm, CX500 final drive & wheel and brake parts from both CX500 & GL500 (they are the same). None of the parts needed modification except that I had to bush the frame for the brake pedal shaft because the CX-E originally had disc rear brake.

They will fit but when applied the distance from swing arm pivot to engine is short for the front yoke on the GL500 shaft. The rear yoke of the GL shaft has to be assembled to the front yoke of the CX shaft. The CX shaft is to short for the longer GL swingarm. Have not received unit from expert yet but will keep you all updated.

You still haven't said which CX and which GL you are talking about. It might, maybe be possible to use a GL500 shaft, or better yet a CX/GL650 with a removable u-joint.

Yes sorry. I have a CX500 that I am putting a GL500 swingarm on. I have the shaft from the GL500 and sent it off with the CX500 shaft to be assembled in a usable form. Front yoke CX500 rear yoke GL500. Ever thing else has been modified.

Ahh.... That makes a lot of sense. I haven't had a CX500 driveshaft in person but from the pics I have seen and what others have written the main difference is that the pivot point of the u-joint is farther from the back of the engine because it has to be in line with the swingarm's pivot.

As Eccles rear end proves, there is no problem using a CX final drive and a GL shaft or vise versa. The only difference in the FDs is that the CX has a stud for the shock absorber and the GL does not. How much difference in length is there between the CX & GL shafts? I'm wondering if you couldn't have just used the whole CX shaft...

BTW: Back then Honda called them propeller shafts, the same as BMW did.

Ok I know it has been awhile but it had a long way to go back and forth. The modified piece is below the left over pieces above from the two shafts. The longer forward portion is from the CX500 and the longer rear portion is from the GL500. Needed to fit the GL Pro Link rear swing arm to the CX along with other mods. IE: The pivot bearings are a different size and need modification, the mount for the single shock (I decided on duals) and the mounts for lower Pro Arm link. Still has to be road tested

Ok there she is. I call it the "CXPro" Cx for the obvious and Pro for the Pro Link rear

Oh just an afterthought It is not finished. Dark blue powder for frame and wheels chrome work and a transparent blue small 919 fly screen should do it. There are rumblings of a CX650 turbo in the back of my head!
