I had a temp gauge and fuel level gauge not reading properly, so dug in and replaced the 7V regulator on my 81 GL1100. Here is how it is done.
1. Remove headlight bucket bolts and lower bucket out of way.
2. Remove plastic cover from back of instrument panel. (Phillips or JIS driver)
3. Remove 7V regulator (one screw and one nut)
4. Test 7V regulator (Multimeter, two alligator clip connector sets)
5. Replace 7V regulator if needed (make certain two holes are lined up to allow cluster back holding screws to go through)
6. Reassemble
