How to get at the sire for the fuel gage on top of the tank?

My fuel gage is not working but my temp gage is. I checked the 7v regulator and it is ok. It was suggested to me to take the wire from the top of the gas tank and ground it to try to figure out if there is a wiring problem or a fuel sending unit problem or a gage problem.
Do I have to remove the seat to do this on my 76 gl1000?
Help appreciated as always! Have a great day!

Look on each side, somewhat under the seat by the area of the shockabsorbers.
On each side you will find one bolt (usually black) holding a clamp, which secures the seat to the frame. Remove both bolts; then pull the seat back and up.
Look under the seat to ensure that there is a "tongue" affixed to the front of the seat frame. That piece must go under the frame-cross-bar to secure the seat when mounting it back.

My 75 GL did the same thing, it was a loose connector on top of the tank, if thats the case you can take some needle nose pliers and squeeze the female connector down a bit so when you put it back on its tight
