Front fork oil changing tutorial

#1

Post by Skydiver173 »

...for an '82 Goldwing Interstate with airshocks (and similar models).

A few days ago, I managed to change the oil in the front forks. It took me a while to find an easy way to get this done but I think i've found it. My bike has front forks with adjustable air shocks and I'm hoping that this small tutorial will help anyone having problems changing the oil in a reasonable amount of time without having to remove the spring-loaded fork caps. If anyone knows that removing and reinstalling those caps can be a pain in the arse so this is an alternative way of doing the job but without the headaches of having parts launched into orbit.

First, I found a bottle of heavy-weight oil with the pointed tip dispensing cap.

I removed the cap and installed it on a bottle of ATF with the correct amount of fluid in it (for me, that was 290cc). The ATF bottle has markings on the side so you'll know exactly how much is being put into each fork as you pump in the fluid.

Image

Before beginning, remove all the air from the front forks and remove the right side air line that links the two front forks.

Image

Cut the tip of the bottle cap so the airline fits inside VERY tight as seen in the picture below. The tip should be small enough that you'll have to screw the airline into it. Again, make sure it's very tight so it doesn't pop out of the cap and make a mess all over you're bike!

Make sure the ATF bottle has the correct amount of fluid and screw the cap onto the bottle tighly. Attach the other end of the airline to the fork your working on and you're ready to go.

Once the line is hooked up to the bottle and the fork, engage the front brakes to keep the bike from moving, hold the bottle upside-down and press down the front end of the bike for about 20-30 seconds. You'll hear air bubbles in the bottle as the fork expells the air into the bottle, pressurizing it. Continue to hold the front end down so that the pressure equilizes between the fork and the bottle. The small hose will eventually begin to fill with ATF (or the oil of your choice).

Now pull up on the front end of the bike and the suction will draw the liquid out of the bottle and into the fork. Again, hold it up for approx. 20-30 seconds to allow the pressure to equilize, and allow the fuild to drain to the bottom of the forks. Repeat the process until the bottle is empty. If all goes well, you should hear air bubbles in the bottle every time you press down on the forks.

Once the bottle is empty, unscrew the hose from the fork, refill the bottle to the desired level, attach the hose to the remaining fork and repeat this entire process. It took less than 30 minutes to do both forks so I'm hoping this will help anyone doing the same thing without the headaches of removing the fork caps. :D
