Hi folks,
The fuel & temp gauges were working fine and suddenly they both failed at the same time. Ilumination is working in both but they dont move. I've checked fuses and are OK. Any idea? Maybe the 7V regulator?
Thanks from a GL learner.

Yes check the 7V regulator
(Illumination i run by the normal 12V system)
Did you test it the first time you had this problem?
Check wires comming to and from the regulator.
Unplug the plug from the back of the regulator.
Clean both parts: "male" and "female" side.
Move it in and out a few times.
Hope this helps.

If they are both not working , more then likley the 7v regulator. Doulbe check all the conections first like Octane said. Should be able to find a home made one on ebay for about $30.00 , Good luck

Where is the 7v regulator? I have the same problem, my fuel and temp guages don't come on, but they do illuminate. Thanks. Where do I find one other than Ebay? Thanks again. Too, where is the fuse box? I didn't get a manual with my bike, and I don't have a manual of any kind yet. Thanks once again.
I saw that image the first time and wondered:
then what's that on the underneath backside of the instrument cluster itself?
I have what seems to be a 1978, it says 7V and looks like it could be a regulator. I never checked as I haven't had any problems. [ahem] yet.

....mmmm
If they both don't work, (and the regulator works)
what comes to mind is the 7volt wire
supplying the gauges.
Trace the Green/Black wire from the regulator
and check if it's OK.
Also check if the Green wire from the regulator is properly grounded.
Check the multi connectors and the connections to gauges.
If it's OK then you can check the fuel gauge:
that box thingie at the upper right corner is the 7v regulator.

Actually, the temp gage does work (I just rode it oon the hiway for the first time) what a bike!. The fuel gage is on "E" with a full tank. Any idea how I check to see if it is the gague or the sending unit or somehwere between?
To check the fuel gauge just unplug the wire on top of the fuel tank and ground it. You should see the gauge start to move up. If it does not move, then chances are the gauge is no good. There is always a possibility that the wire to the gauge is no good but not likely. On my bike (76 GL1000) I had the same problem and it turned out to be the sending unit (float). I replaced that and it's worked fine ever since. It's even reasonably accurate!
Hi, Now seems all works fine: I've re-checked all wire connections, change what seems to be bad and gauges works.Multimeter shows 14,5V running at 5000 rpm, reg.in is 12V and out 7V,so I imagine all is OK.
Thanks everyone for your triks. ( Anyway, I have 3 spare 7V reg...)

My fuel gage for my 76 gl1000 is not working (never has since I got it). I removed the seat and tried to ground each wire (seperately) and NOTHING (it did not move at all grounding either wire). Should I try to purchase a new gage?
Also, I checked the voltage and I am getting 7 volts at the regualtor and the temp gage does work. Help appreciated.

Check the center wire on top of the sending unit to see if you have 7 volts there. then check for continuity to ground from the top metal plate of the sending unit. If those are good open up the false tank lid and check the wires that hook up to the gage. That seems to be a bad area for corrosion. I would remove the wires check for voltage there then clean the connections and hook them up again before I bought a new gage.
