intake capacity

Hello all. It's been awhile since my last post. Will a single 45mm carb supply enough air to the plenum for the engine to run properly? I'm looking for more economy without a huge loss in power. This carb is a Mikuni and came off a HD with over 1400cc displacement. Cheers. Dave Allen.

Should be ok, some of the Webers used on the single carb setups are 36 mm. Be sure and let us all know if you get better milage with it! At the very worst you might lose a little of the top end that isn't used that much anyway.

That might work. It would take a lot of thought for the plumbing though. The carb would have to remain vertical so youd need to make an intake pipe to mate the carb outlet into the plenum. Not impossible at all but would need to be thought out pretty well. Air flow needs to be right for everything to work properly. Especially if you are looking for mileage you need to keep the velocity up at lower RPM for torque.

I'm with you cookie. I remember seeing that mod somewhere. Try a google search for mikuni on goldwing.

Thanks guy's. My first thought was I could plumb the carb into the top of the airbox with a half U bent tube. Run hose where the carbs are supposed to be into the cylinders. My hope is both better fuel economy and possibly more torque off the bottom. This is for my reverse trike project (remember that one?). It has been on the shelf for some time while I have worked on a bobber project (not a wing). I did buy a second goldwing, a naked '82, for parts but again it is too nice to tear apart. under 22,000 miles, had a cracked head but came with new heads and engine disassembled. Cheers. Dave Allen.
