White wall tires for the GL1000

#1

Post by John H Rogers »

I noticed a real nice GL1000 in the photos on this site that has wide whitewall tires. I'm customizing a 1978 1000 & would love to add white walls, but can't find any manufacturer or supplier of tires in my size. Can anyone suggest how he did it? My tires are 100/90-19 front & 120/90 -17 rear.

I've tried these sites, but although I can find a front tire in Whitewall, no one seems to make a 17 inch rear. That's why I wondered about the photo!

Thanks BIG T & Bandanna! I've tried both those site with no luck, but I did e-mail them & maybe they'll be able to suggest something. The bike I saw with the nice wide white walls is on page 2 of the photos & is listed as GUNNY'S GL1000. It kind of looks like the wheels are from a GL1100 though. I'm still searching. I'm having my 78 GL1000 repainted in white & need some new tires anyway so I'd love to get some White walls!

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate the help, but both sites turned out dead ends also. It may well be that no one makes the white wall, & Gunny has some kind of after market rims. :-D

 I think I found a solution. I just bought (on E-Bay) a 16" rear wheel made by Lester for the 75-79 GL1000. Since Maxxis makes a tire with the right size for my front tire, I'm hopeful I can find the right 16" tire for the rear.

sounds like you win! congrads on that. Might look at some white walls for my bike. Maybe the cb900 would look good with them.

I think so, a CB900 Custom _cruiser_ with white walls should look
pretty cool.

From Gunny: "I got these "Maxxis Classic" tires for Christmas.
They were ordered from Dennis Kirk page 257 of the 2004 catalog.
The rear is a 130/90H-16 and the drive shaft housing had to be
shaved down for it to fit. The front is a 100/90H-19"

Thank you for your answer Gunny. tumb2
