I almost pulled the trigger today. I got the engine all wired and plumbed in the test stand but didn't put water in it. I needed to think about it a little bit more.
HOTT - the Webers are just so tuneable. Not easy to get to know, but I've been living with a pair for 3 years now. The DCOE's are widely regarded to be the best running Webers. I think the way I have White Trash jetted would transfer over nicely to the DCOE's.
Robin thinks that re-jetting the stock CV's is doable. I'm a skeptic (not even my pin chuck will hold the small drills required to ream out those little idle jets). I'm going down to Indiana tomorrow and I have a hunch that this project will be discussed. Ad Naseum.

I would bypass the fuel pump for your start up. Just run line from test tank to the carbs. Just eliminates one thing that you don't know for certain works. It also allows filling of the carbs before cranking it over. If you do use the fuel pump pre-fill the carbs first.

I've run the engine and everything worked as it should. The fuel runs are a lot longer now and the volume of the lines + front carb manifolds is probably 4 or 5 times what the stock system is.
I'll gravity feed the system and try to get all the air out before I crank it over.

Shouldn't need to worry about any air. Unless you plugged something you shouldn't have.

OK. The bottom line is - it ran, and it ran pretty well.
The frst attempt showed me that I'm a moron. For all of you who were guessing the moron part - that video would have proved it. I was embaresd. I won't post it.
(I had the coils wired to the wrong sides.)
I fixed the wiring and it fired right up. Ran poorly since everything was way out of adjustment.
After a couple of attempts at adjusting the idle mix and the sync, things were much better.
The chokes are at about 3/4 closed. This is a really nice engine and I certainly didn't want to hurt it by running way lean.
(Robin - I didn't shim the needles for this test.)

Dude, don't give up so quick. Send them down to me.
They won't "growl" so much until you get the jetting right. What you need to do first is to just let it idle for about a minute. Then shut it off and pull all 4 plugs. That will give you an idea where the pilot jet's are.
Then you can play with the washer's we talked about. Mic them to be sure they are all at least real close to the same thickness. You may need more that one. Or thicker one's would be better if you can get them.

I have a set on the 900F and did they ever wake up that motor without a big fuel mileage penalty. There is no accelerator pump, so you have to roll on the throttle instead of just stabbing it, but you better be hanging on when you get on the cam. Probably not any cheaper than the Webers though. Oh, and they do growl very nicely.
Besides, if you do all the foot work, I won't have to later . . . .
